Lionesses Victory Ignites Local Interest
It’s reported that local football clubs are already seeing a surge in interest from women and girls wanting to get involved in the sport, following England’s victory over German in the final of the Womens’ EURO tournament on Sunday.
Millmoor Juniors and Brinsworth Whitehill JFC are reported to have seen a spike in interest, while Kiveton Park FC, which has a long-established strong female presence throughout the club, will likely see more people wanting to get involved in the sport during the new season.
Sunday’s final at Wembley, in which England beat Germany 2-1, followed four games hosted at Rotherham’s ASSEAL New York Stadium. The four game days all featured pre-match fan parties that attracted large increases in the number of people visiting and enjoying time in the town centre.
Fan party events in Rotherham town centre brought a vibrant, colourful atmosphere on matchdays, with a significant increase in the number of visitors.
Footfall figures for Rotherham town centre on matchdays, compared with the same day the previous week were:
France v Italy, 137% increase*
France v Belgium, 62% increase
France v Iceland, 40% increase
France v Netherlands, 91% increase
Host City Supporters, RNN College and FLUX Rotherham supported Rotherham Council by hosting activities within the fan parties.
Just in case you missed the sea of orange, you can relive the Netherlands fans' walk to the stadium ahead of their quarter-final.
Partnership to Build on EURO 22 Legacy
We’ve been part of a team effort alongside Rotherham Ethnic Minority Alliance (REMA), during the Womens’ EURO, to get more women and girls into football and other physical activity. The project was led by Rotherham women, including Flora and Fauna Photography and Amy Kilner Design, and shared the short, inspiring Twitter stories about women and girls who were enjoying the health and wellbeing benefits of physical activity. You can follow the stories on Twitter by visiting @REMACharity.
‘Grassroots to Glory; Our Story So Far, a free exhibition at Clifton Park Museum, runs to Sunday 9th October. The exhibition is the first time the history of women’s football in Rotherham has been researched and archived and tracks the stories of nine inspirational women. All nine started playing the game on the town’s playing fields and between them went on to play at international level or carved out careers in the football industry.
Read more about the exhibition and their stories.
If you're wanting more football facts, Rotherham United has its own pop-up exhibition too. The Millers will be celebrating the club’s history at the AESSEAL New York Stadium until the end of summer.
