The Friends of Rawmarsh Cemeteries
We are actively seeking enthusiastic volunteers to be involved in our group, to assist in the maintaining and future development of the three beautiful Cemeteries in the heart of the Rawmarsh community. There’s something to get involved in for all ages and levels of mobility, from clearing weeds to making hot drinks, being part of the planning or meeting local people for a chat. Everyone is welcome!
The three cemeteries are:
High Street Cemetery
A beautiful turn of the century cemetery, with a lot of character, a rich history, and a well-used local greenspace, which is now requiring considerable work to make it more accessible. We would love to hear ideas from local people who use this site on how we can improve this space and make it a valuable historical and conservation asset for the community. This could be a beautiful and peaceful place to explore or just sit and take a breather.
Haugh Road Cemetery
Another beautiful site, with a lot of character and an impressive disused chapel which is in much need of attention and a new purpose. It would be great to work with members of the local community to bring this building back into use as a much-needed community space. We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
Greasbrough Lane Cemetery
The more popular and modern of the three cemeteries, with beautiful views over the local countryside. We would love to hear from members of the local community on how to improve the space for its current users and generations to come.
Feel free to contact Jill and Bob with your ideas or to find out about upcoming events and meetings.
Summer Reading Challenge Reward
On Thursday 28th October 46 children and 40 adults all set off from Rawmarsh Library to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster. This special treat paid for by the Rawmarsh East and Rawmarsh West Councillors, was a reward to all the local children who signed up and completed the Summer Reading Challenge.
The day turned out to be a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by young and old alike. We saw a new family of sea lions making a splash, the beautiful polar bears frolicking around having lots of fun and the stripy mischief Lemurs scurrying around swinging from the tree tops above our heads.
Some were even lucky enough to see Baby Pablo, a Red Howler Monkey born only two weeks ago, being carried around by his mum. It is thought to be the first ever birth of this rare species in the UK.
A fantastic day was had by all, even the weather was kind enabling the children to have a good look around the park and learn some fascinating facts along the way.
After a fun fact based day all the children arrived home safely and tired but, more importantly, without being eaten by some of the extremely large animals!
