Looking after your mental health

Mental Health Awareness Week begins next week.

The week, which is hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, is in its 21st year and runs from 10-16 May.

The national lockdown has been difficult for many of us and now that restrictions are easing there may be new challenges to consider.

The Every Mind Matters website offers tips and advice on dealing with anxiety, low mood, stress, sleep issues. There is also updated advice on coronavirus for parents and children and young people.

Mental Health Week 2021

Some of the ways people can participate in Mental Health Awareness Week:

  • Why not try to make a habit each day of connecting to the nature in your local area? Stop to listen to the birdsong, smell the freshly cut grass, take care of a house plant, notice any trees, flowers or animals nearby. Take a moment to appreciate these connections.
  • Share images/videos/or just sound recordings of the nature on your doorstep (and how this made you feel) on social media using #ConnectWithNature and #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek
  • Use Mental Health Foundation resources in your family, school, workplace and community to join with thousands of people who will be finding new ways to connect with nature in their local environment.

You can also share what has helped you stay strong through the past year by taking part in the Great Big Rotherham To-Do List.

Help to inspire other people to continue good habits – and discover new ways to keep healthy in mind and body – by getting involved today.

Weekly COVID Cases and Rotherham Hospital Latest

The rate of cases of COVID in Rotherham has continued to fall and is now at 35.0 per 100,000 with 93 cases in the borough in the last week. This remains above the England average rate of 22.5 per 100,000, but we have seen a noticeable fall locally in response to successful roll out the vaccination programme by our local NHS partners. Vaccination is not only helping to keep people safe from harm but is also reducing transmission and enabling us to keep the case rate lower and to continue the easing of restrictions.

As the rate remains higher than the national average, it is really important that we continue to follow the current guidance, meeting outside where virus transmission is reduced and by getting vaccinated as soon as you are offered your chance.

Rotherham Hospital

As of 8am on Wednesday 5 May, there were 3 inpatients in Rotherham Hospital who have tested positive for Covid-19, of which 1 was in critical care. This brings the total number of inpatients who have tested positive since the start of the pandemic to 2,565.

Rotherham organisations urged to bid for government’s Community Renewal Fund

Organisations with fresh ideas to boost Rotherham’s economy and help people and communities hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic are being urged to submit their bids into a new national fund.

The UK Community Renewal Fund (CRF) aims to encourage new and imaginative programmes to help Rotherham grow and thrive, building sustainable communities where people want to live and work.

The CRF pilot is the result of a £220 million investment by the Government and is a pre-cursor to the Shared Prosperity Fund.

Organisations are urged to bring forward innovative ideas to boost the local economy by investing in skills, supporting local businesses, helping people into employment and helping local communities to recover.

The fund is for projects that can be delivered and completed up to March 31, 2022 with organisation able to bid for up to £3million pounds worth of revenue funding to help bring their ideas to life.

Applications are welcome from local organisations with the Council particularly interested in hearing from:

  • Voluntary and community sector organisations
  • Umbrella business groups
  • Universities and colleges
  • Private sector organisations providing a service to benefit other organisations or individuals

Bids need to be submitted to Rotherham Council by Wednesday 19 May at 5pm. The Council will then compile a shortlist of projects to submit to the Mayoral Combined Authority who will put forward projects to the government. Successful projects will be announced by the government from Summer 2021 onwards.

Specialist support is available to groups needing help to write their bids. Please email Nicola.phillips@rotherham.gov.uk for more information.

Further information on how to bid and the application can be found here.

Community Testing support available at the Unity Centre

Unity Centre Testing

We have had a really good take up of regular rapid lateral flow tests across Rotherham but we also know it is a daunting step for many residents. We’re encouraging everyone over the age of 16 to get regular tests to help stop the spread of COVID-19, especially if you’re going out more often or if you work in a public facing role (such as in retail or as a taxi driver).

If you want support or advice, the Community Test Site at the Unity Centre is still open for you to use.

The Unity Centre is open every Tuesday and Friday from 8:45am – 3:15pm for anyone over the age of 16. The test centre will also be closed between 12:30pm and 1:00pm for lunch break.

No booking is required, but you may be asked to queue at busy times.
