Rotherham West neighbourhood update

Keep fit at home Rotherham Ethnic Minority Alliance were successful in securing funding from the Inequalities Grant Funding from Yorkshire Sport to create an online platform to give Rotherham residents free access to physical activity. Local elections in May

Register to vote

The government has confirmed that local elections will take place in Rotherham in May this year. Polls to elect all Rotherham Borough Councillors, the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner and parish councillors across the borough will take place on Thursday 6 May.

Work is underway to ensure that the elections are conducted as safely as possible, including measures such as transparent screens and providing hand sanitiser at polling stations, but voters may consider alternatives such as postal ballots and voting by proxy. It is quick and easy to register to vote – we would urge Rotherham residents not to leave it too late to register.

Ward boundary changes All seats on Rotherham Council are up for election this year, and will take place based on new ward boundaries for all wards and all seats. The number of council seats will be reduced from 63 to 59 and the number of wards will be increased from 21 to 25. There will be nine three-councillor wards and 16 two-councillor wards across the borough. In Rotherham West ward there are minor changes. Parts of Kimberworth (currently in Keppel ward) will move into Rotherham West ward. A full map of the new wards can be found on the Council’s elections web page. Voters will begin to receive their poll cards from the end of March, which will include details of which ward they come under and which polling station they should use (if not voting by post or proxy), which may have changed following the boundary review.

Ferham Action Day Following consultation with Rotherham West councillors and the council’s Housing and Neighbourhoods teams, Streetpride targeted Belmont Street, Holmes Lane and Josephine and Cavendish roads for clean up.This took place on 16th February. Councillor reacts to Covid vaccine call

As the mass rollout of vaccinations to protect the population from the threat of becoming seriously ill with coronavirus continues, there was a call for marshals to help direct and manage people arriving at the centres for their jabs.

Rotherham West Councillor Ian Jones stepped forward and has been on duty at the vaccination centre set up at Rawmarsh Customer Service Centre on Barbers Avenue. After doing his stint on Saturday 27^th February, Councillor Jones said:

‘Another great volunteer vaccine Marshal shift at Rawmarsh on Saturday,  topped with lovely  sunny weather. It was great to speak to so many people eager to get their Jab. So many turned up early that at one point we even had a queue. It was also nice to see and talk to some of our most vulnerable residents who were out for the first time in nearly a year. A truly humbling  experience.’
