welcome to the December edition of the Wath Ward E-Bulletin, in this edition you can read about the following:
Hello from Sally at Active Dearne
I'm Sally and I will now be looking after Active Dearne in Wath. Some of you may know me as Sally Shortcake as I once had a cafe in Wath.
I'm here to find out what support you would like from us at this time? Do you want to get moving or simply want someone to talk to? Are you feeling isolated? Are you worried about your health?
Please get in touch and let me know how the Active Dearne project could help you. You can message me on the Active Dearne Wath Facebook page (please follow us if you don't already) or you could email me Sally.Corns@yorkshiresport.org

Christmas Arrives in Wath Town Centre
The Wath Events Team are delighted to see the lights now lit in Wath Town Centre. They would like to thank Next for their generous donation towards the cost of providing the Christmas tree and lights this year even though the Events Team were unable to hold their usual lights switch on event.
The Christmas tree outside Montgomery Hall this year has been sponsored by Community Connect so thank you to Community Connect for their support to bring a little Christmas cheer to Wath.

Wath Hall - Bought by the people for the people
In late July, after six years hard work, Wath Hall Limited succeeded in buying the old Wath town hall from Rotherham Council for the community of Wath. This was possible because of the fantastic success of a community share issue in June 2019. More than £90,000 was raised and that was matched by the Community Shares Booster Programme.
Nothing like this has ever been done in Rotherham or South Yorkshire - local folk raising the cash to buy the freehold of an historic building! Wath Hall is 250 years old and for many years its grounds have hosted Wath’s community events – town gala, church garden parties, Wath Folk Festival. The big plan for the Hall is to house a heritage centre and develop office space for start-up businesses, particularly in the creative-industry and community support sectors.
Since taking ownership of the Hall at the end of this July we have been very busy getting it ready for business:
- Tree survey completed to plan conservation of the parkland (financed by the ward devolved budget).
- Volunteers cleared ground and planted ferns, hostas and persicaria to create a Shade Garden.
- Deep-cleaning operation completed to make the building Covid-19 compliant.
- Employed local companies for work on the Hall
- Fire alarm system and electrical circuits in rooms and corridors rewired
- New external security lighting fitted.
- New kitchen fitted (supplied free of charge by Howdens Joinery).
- Old gas boiler in the cellar made safe and central heating system drained down
- Large skip used to clear material from the Hall, remove green waste and clear autumn leaf fall.
In the challenging social and economic environment created by the current Covid-19 virus emergency, our project is all the more urgent. If you would like more information visit our website.

Latest coronavirus advice
Rotherham is in the Tier 3: Very High Alert level of Covid-19 restrictions as of Wednesday 2 December.
Under Tier 3 retail, gyms and close-contact beauty services like hairdressers can open but many venues including pubs, restaurants, hotels and indoor entertainment such as cinemas and bingo halls must remain closed.
You must not meet people from outside your household or support bubble socially, either indoors or in most outdoor places. This includes in any private garden and most outdoor venues.
You can meet others in a group of no more than 6 people at some outdoor public spaces, such as parks or countryside accessible to the public or a heritage site – this is called the ‘rule of 6’. Social distancing must be used.
Further information and advice can be found on the Coronavirus pages of the Rotherham Council website.
