Fitzwilliam Estate Impact Day
The Council's Streetpride service, Mears and the Swinton Ward Councillors joined forces with Rotherham Councils Housing Department in August to undertake an Impact Day on the Fitzwilliam Estate.
The work included removing weeds and detritus from the kerb edges allowing the road sweeper to undertake a thorough clean of the top half of the estate. All fly-tipping and rubbish was removed from Lawrence Drive and a thorough litter pick was undertaken on the top half of the estate.
It is hoped that a suitable date can be identified in September to undertake the same works on the bottom half of the estate. The housing officer for the area said "it looks amazing and has made such a difference to the estate".

TV Sharing Project
As part of a lot of good work that has taken place during lockdown came the TV Sharing Project. It all came about when the TV of an resident who was isolating stopped working and they couldn't afford to replace it.
As we will all recall from lockdown, watching TV was a great relief from the boredom of being at home for such a long period of time, and the Swinton Ward Councillors didn't want anyone to be without a TV!A call out was made to see if anyone had working TV that they no longer needed and soon the resident was provided a working TV. So far 15 households have benefited from the project.
If you have a spare working TV that could help a family in the Swinton Ward or are in need of a TV and can't afford to purchase one please get in touch with Councillor Ken Wyatt using the contact details below.

Pottery Ponds Improvements
Following concerns from local residents about the condition of the Pottery Ponds site, a lot of work has taken place to improve the car parking area with more works in the planning for other areas of the site.
Following a site visit with a number of residents keen to help improve the site, it was agreed that a Day of Action would be arranged, where interested residents can help improve the site further.
If you would be interested in helping cut back weeds and undertake litter picking for a few hours on a Saturday please let Lucy Reader, the Neighbourhood Co-ordinator for Swinton, know using the contact details below. Once a date has been arranged Lucy can then advise you of the arrangements.

Health and History Walks to Resume
The very popular Health and History Walks are set to resume in partnership with the Active Dearne project. The walks will follow the current guidance for group walks. If you would like to attend watch out for them being publicised locally.

Reducing Speeding Vehicles on Wentworth Road
Following residents raising concerns with the Swinton Ward Councillors about speeding vehicles on Wentworth Road at Swinton a site visit was held with officers from the Councils Highways Department to see what could be done to help.
A traffic volume and speed survey will soon be undertaken to measure vehicles speed travelling in the direction from Warren Vale. This will accompany the data already obtained from a previous survey of vehicles travelling from the Kilnhurst direction. Slow markings will also be applied in both directions near to the bend in the road by the High House pub. It is also hoped that a vehicle activated sign can be installed in the locality as an added speed limit reminder to motorists, a suitable location for the sign to be installed at is currently being investigated.

Mexborough Rangers Junior Football Club Funding Success
The Mexborough Rangers Junior Football Club have recently been successful in their application to the Swinton Ward Budget for funding to purchase small items of equipment for maintaining their grounds which are situated at the bottom of Swinton.
The club was founded in 1998, and has always had the ethos of been a community family friendly club. Club sponsor Stelrads Radiators gifted the ground to the club in 2004 so they could improve the facilities without the worry of ever been evicted. With this in mind the club are now pushing to make (newly-named) Stelrad park, the community sports hub for the ‘whole of Mexborough and the surrounding areas’, not just involving children and football.
They are hoping to start boot camps, adult exercise classes, Zumba and yoga in the near future. The club have made a great partnerships with the charity Mind Over Matter, and are hoping to erect safe spaces so people effected by mental illness can go and take time out, read a book, enjoy the newly built nature reserve, a nice little quite space when the world seems too much!

Latest News from the Active Dearne Project
Couch To 5K
A big thank you to Rawmarsh Runners who have worked with Adam Kent from Active Dearne to set up a successful Couch to 5K for Swinton residents in the last few weeks. The idea came from local residents who have followed a programme from the NHS who were looking to get people active due to COVID-19. See here for further information about Couch to 5K on the NHS website , or please contact Active Dearne Swinton on Facebook.
Active Dearne Commissioning
Active Dearne are looking to work with individuals, groups or organisations who have an interest in looking to get adults or families more active in your community. This could be for weekly activity, on-line activity due to Covid-19 or for a community event for example.
We have small amounts of funding available to help make your ideas come to life, for further information please contact Paul Cummins on paul.cummins@yorkshiresport.gov.uk or call 07702 211893
