Dear Dargavel community member
I wanted to give you a short update on progress with the new primary school being built in Dargavel, as part of our ongoing commitment to keeping you updated on school issues in the area.
The new school will meet growing demand for school places in the area and is planned to be open by August 2027. It will be built on land near the far end of Craigton Drive, and will have capacity for 800 pupils.
You can see an outline of the school on the plan above. Facilities will include:
- a full-size sports pitch and a multi-use games area (MUGA)
- rooms available for community use
- outdoor learning areas
- a parent drop-off area and staff/community car park
Earlier this year we held two public events as part of a 12-week pre-planning engagement period, where we presented draft designs produced by our architects, based on previous work to capture community views on what you wanted from the new school.
All feedback received was considered and factored into the planning application for the new school, which our design team jmarchitects have now submitted.
We can share with you some of the visualisations produced by the architects for that application which show how the new school will look, inside and out.
A view of the main entrance to the school. Please note 'Dargavel 2' is a working title - the official name of the school will be decided through consultation with the community next year.

The planning application will be considered by councillors next year and if approved, we plan to start construction of the new school in summer 2025.
As well as the main planning application for the building itself, jmarchitects have also submitted a separate application for earthworks on the new school site. If approved, this would allow our contractors to do some additional drainage work next year before the main building works starts.
You can see more information on the new school – including the boards we presented at the last public event in September – on our website.
I hope this update has been useful. As always, if you have any other questions, you can reach us via dargavelcs@renfrewshire.gov.uk
I would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and new year.
Gerard McLaughlin Head of Education Renfrewshire Council
