Today, we've launched a new Redbridge 'Love your Clothes' webpage featuring top tips to save money and waste, and we're beginning a new partnership with textile company TRAID to offer free, bookable home collections of clothing in the borough.
An estimated 350,000 tonnes of clothing are binned in the UK each year and this waste has a huge environmental and financial impact. Every time we throw away an item of clothing it’s costing the earth, as well as money in our pocket. It's time for us to take action.
Try these top tips to 'Love your Clothes':
- Reduce: Buy less, and when you do buy consider charity shops or pre-loved buying sites/apps first. Remember that the most sustainable clothes are the ones you already own!
- Reuse: Try repairing or up-cycling your own clothes. If you’re not sure how, try video tutorials or find local repairers in your area, try asking your local dry cleaners. Repair cafes are a great place to start as they are often completely free!
-
Recycle: Visit or host your own clothes swap event or make some extra money on selling sites/apps. Give unwanted clothes new life by donating to charity shops or local textile banks.
To find out more about what you can do to reduce your textiles waste or to book a collection from our charity partner TRAID visit our brand-new Redbridge love your clothes web page.

We’re proud to announce that on March 6 we'll be supporting Love Food Hate Waste’s Food Waste Action Week campaign.
This year’s rallying cry – Win. Don’t Bin – is a week of action which brings the nation together to save time and money by making the food we already have go further.
A soon-to-be-revealed celebrity ambassador along with a team of exciting influencers will be occupying the internet and shining a light on how the correct storage of food can provide a second (or third!) meal for free.
Find our more about how to save yourself time and money on the Love Food Hate Waste website, and look out for the quiz, available from March 6!
Top tip from our team - did you know that if you have lettuce that is past it's best you can add it to soups? It works just like spinach, tastes delicious mixed with other vegetables and most importantly saves it from going in the bin!
National Science Week 2023 runs from the 10th - 19th March. The theme this year is 'connections'. The Our Streets team will be visiting 12 primary schools across the borough to deliver assemblies and workshops on the theme of the 'connection' between human life and the rubbish and recycling we collect each week in Redbridge.
Why not take part in Science Week this year and check you're recycling everything you can? You could even test members of your household to see if they're getting their recycling right, and give bonus points to those who know which materials make up commonly used household items!
Redbridge Council is undertaking a listening exercise to support the development of our Housing Strategy. The Housing Strategy will set out our priorities and vision over the next five years and this listening exercise is an opportunity for you to have their say and help shape our strategic approach to housing in borough. Complete the survey before 13 March 2023.
Redbridge Wall of Shame is back again with more clips of people caught on camera making a mess in the borough, and we need your help to identify them.
If you can help identify any of the offenders, please contact us on cleansing.services@redbridge.gov.uk
