Housing News Autumn 2022
Cllr Vanisha Solanki, Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness and The Leader of The Council, Jas Athwal, attending one of the building sites where work has begun.
Phase two of the affordable homes programme is well underway as we continue to make headway on our commitment to build 600 new affordable homes for rent on existing estates by 2024.
The programme is supported by £20 million from the GLA’s Building homes for London Fund and will see 282 homes built across nine different estates in the borough, including Ilford, South Woodford, Woodford Green, Newbury Park and Barkingside, with a mixture of eco-friendly one, two, three and four-bedroom properties, each boasting a range of features including front and rear gardens, driveways and communal green spaces.
To find out more about the programme visit our webpage.
We conducted a series of Estate Days over the summer holidays across several of our Affordable Homes schemes.
Over the course of these estate days, residents affected by the new homes had the opportunity to meet with the contractors and the project team to discuss support available to them.
One of the main focal points for discussions was the landscaping around the existing estates which drew both comments and suggestions from residents. To update, we are currently reviewing the landscape design, having listened to feedback received. Residents will be invited to provide further feedback once designs have been updated and finalised.

To help tackle the growing problem and rising number of homeless households and increasing cost of accommodation, we’ve committed to building 600 new affordable homes by 2024 and procuring temporary properties which can be constructed at pace on council owned land.
The work doesn’t stop there, to secure an affordable supply of temporary accommodation in order to meet the growing demand for housing, we’ve invested £45 million in our Housing Purchase and Repair Programme, allowing us to buy, repair/refurbish a mix of two, three, four and five bedroom properties with the current emphasis on the larger units.
If you’re considering selling your property, please contact the Home Ownership Team for further information.

Redbridge Council is promoting cheaper broadband for lower-income households across the country. Several internet service providers (ISPs) in the U.K., including Virgin Media, O2 and BT, already offer “social tariffs,” which are cheaper broadband and phone packages. These packages are available for those who receive social security payments such as Universal Credit.
More information is available on the Ofcom website.

In July, Cllr Vanisha Solanki, Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness and Cllr LLoyd Jacob Duddridge, formally opened the new gym area on the Orchard Estate.
Previously, this was a seating area that would occasionally attract anti social behaviour due to it's location and being poorly lit. Having undergone a complete revamp, the area now consists of three pieces of exercise equipment, allowing residents the opportunity to improve their health and well-being
Alongside the installation of the new equipment, we've also removed the damaged benches, installed solar powered floodlights and refurbished the existing railings surrounding the area to help combat anti-social behaviour.
Cllr Solanki said, "As part of our overall plan in making continuous improvements to estate/council properties throughout the borough, the new outdoor gym on Orchard Estate will provide residents with an area to exercise and improve their health and well-being".

A range of flood alleviation measures are being installed across Redbridge to increase the borough’s resilience to flooding.
The move by the council comes as the risk of flash floods occurring more frequently increases as a consequence of climate change, and follows last July’s widespread flash floods, which impacted neighbourhoods in Redbridge and across London.
