Local resident Julia has been inspiring neighbours and leading local community group GoodGym to improve the look and feel of Hainault. The group have tended the planters outside Hainault station since 2019 when they were installed as a collaboration between local residents, TFL and Redbridge Council Neighbourhood Team. Julia and the GoodGym crew have stepped up their game, Julia explains:
The residents group have put a lot of care into the planters by watering, replacing of plants and litter picking when needed. Recently we started joining in with the council's StreetTag activity, which gives residents the chance to get active, enjoy our borough and earn points by running, walking and cycling! We've built up points and used our prize pot for compost and flowers for the planters!
What an amazing result for all involved, and for Hainault. Massive thumbs up to all involved. The group would love anyone in the area to please help the community maintain the planters by watering them when you see them looking dry, especially over the summer.
Inspired by Julia's story? Our team can help you start a community garden or offer planters for adoption in public places to share more joy across the borough.
Did you know that Love Your Parks Week starts this Friday? Why not celebrate by visiting one of Redbridge's many beautiful parks. Please remember to take all your litter home with you, or why not go one step further and make yourself a zero waste picnic? Here are our top tips:
- Bring your own plates and cutlery and consider taking a cool box or picnic basket with you
- Make rolls, sandwiches or salads at home and transport in a Tupperware
- Take a reusable water bottle out with you filled with a refreshing drink!
If you have little ones, our colleagues at Vision are running some wonderful FREE events in the parks for children, such as Recycle for our Forest on Wednesday 27 July, keep children entertained and book a space for free via the Vision ticket website.
If you fancy volunteering in one of Redbridge's parks check out Vision's park volunteer webpage.

A local resident and member of Cleaner Greener Wanstead is sharing his passion for composting with his local community. With the support of our Engagement and Education Team last month the compost bin has been placed right by Christchurch Green in Wanstead and is open for passers by with apple cores and those in nearby properties to try composting uncooked kitchen waste in.
Composting is great for turning kitchen scraps into excellent soil improver and for reducing waste and carbon emissions at home! Local residents can join in, receive free advice and get support for setting up their own compost bin by getting in touch with: cleanergreenerwanstead@gmail.com
For residents in other areas who would like support or share their own experiences and love for the awesomeness of composting please get in touch with us. We’d love to hear from you!

Thinking of heading out and about on your bike this summer? We've made it even easier to hop on your bike and visit some of Redbridge's buzzing high streets.
Redbridge Council is installing more than 100 new cycle racks offering safe and secure parking spots for bicycles to encourage more environmentally friendly trips to local high streets and nearby amenities.
The move comes as part of the council’s commitment to developing the borough’s cycling infrastructure to support local people to adopt greener and healthier travel choices. Read more about this story on our website.
Don't forget we have the fantastic, Try Before You Bike (TBYB) scheme that allows anyone who lives, works, or studies in Redbridge to try out a new or nearly new bike for a monthly fee, that can be claimed back if you decide to buy the bike! You can read more and apply online.

Despite household waste collections, bulky waste collections, charity collections of furniture and commercial waste collections, being available to residents, there is still a minority who decide to dump their rubbish on our streets.
There are 10 new clips of grime crime offenders on our July edition of Redbridge Wall of Shame & we need your help identifying the culprits caught on camera making a mess on our streets.

Let us know through our Wall of Shame if you recognise anyone featured in the latest edition: https://wallofshame.redbridge.gov.uk

June 16 was #WorldRefillDay and we celebrated by joining millions of people around the world taking action to prevent plastic pollution.
We invited our residents on social media Our Streets Redbridge | Facebook to make a small change and switch from single-use to reuse, share their actions and download the free Refill app. This brilliant app can help you find places to refill your bottles on the go, eat, drink and shop with less waste, check our the refill website for more information. Super handy, given the recent heatwave!
The campaign was successful worldwide, reaching over 150 million people in 80 countries! Join the refill revolution and save money and waste as you hydrate.

Two of our Cleansing Team, Ben and Dean, recently went the extra mile for some local residents. Whilst jet washing on Wanstead High Street, two female teenagers approached Ben and Dean for help.
The teenagers had felt threatened by a member of the public, suspected intoxicated, who was following them whilst shouting abusive language. Ben (pictured on the left) and Dean (on the right) offered that the teenagers stay within the jet washing barriers until a parent arrived to pick them up.
The operatives ensured the teenagers safety, and kept a barrier between them and the challenging individual. The parent was very grateful for their help in keeping her daughters safe. A huge thank you to our team members for going the extra mile!

We've had a wonderful Plastic Free July.
We kicked off with a stall at Fairlop Fair where we made Plastic Free July pledges with residents pledging to give up single use plastic items from take away cups to plastic bags. We've had top tips sent in from our community; like the video we shared on Facebook from Redbridge resident, Lydia. We've also had several reusable nappy trial pack applications during July, as well as the wonderful Repair Café at Fullwell Cross Library last Saturday.
Missed out? It's never too late to get started on a plastic free journey, check out our plastic free tips on our website for some ideas to kick you off.
