Residents living in some parts of Redbridge will be offered enhanced COVID-19 testing after two isolated, non-travel related cases of the South African variant of the virus were identified in the borough.
The weekly number of COVID-19 cases is falling in Redbridge. But it is very important to identify any cases of new variants through the enhanced testing programme so that we can stop further transmission.
From today (Friday 30 April) up to 13,000 people aged 11+ living or working in the following postcodes are strongly encouraged to take a PCR test over the next two weeks: IG1, IG6 and small parts of IG5 and IG7.
Everyone who lives in the mass testing areas will receive a letter in the post from Redbridge Council during the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend. The letter will explain how to get tested and the support available.
There is currently no evidence to show that this variant causes more severe illness, but we are working with the NHS to see if there are any more cases. By taking a test, you will be playing your part in helping to keep your community and loved ones safe.
View more information on surge testing, how to get tested and which areas are included.
If you do not live in the areas where the South African variant has been found and are unable to work from home, please continue to get tested twice a week at one of our permanent rapid test sites.
The Redbridge vaccination bus is now available for community use. The vaccination bus has clinicians and volunteers on site, ready to administer first and second vaccines for Redbridge residents.
Anyone eligible for a first or second vaccination can book their jab using the number below and residents can also pick up rapid testing kits or come along for information and advice.
The bus is initially providing twilight sessions at local mosques to enable residents observing Ramadan to attend and get vaccinated, without breaking their fast. Going forward the bus will be available across different locations in the borough.
For more information have a look at our video featuring some of our community doctors. To book the bus for your community group or workplace, please call 0800 0358 929.
Currently 9 in 10 pharmacies are now offering free (COVID-19) tests for home use.
If you are aged 42 or over – or have an underlying condition that puts you at high risk, have a learning disability or are a carer – you can also get your COVID-19 vaccination at any of our participating pharmacies.
To book please select the pharmacy that is most convenient for you.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has issued new advice confirming that all pregnant women will be offered the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
The decision comes after real-world data from the US showed about 90,000 pregnant women had been vaccinated without any safety concerns. The advice has been welcomed by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.of Monday (5 April), more than 100,000 people have received their first dose of the vaccine in Redbridge. That means that 42% of the registered GP population (aged 18 and over) have had their first vaccine.
