Your Southsea Coastal Scheme update

 Down on Frontage 5 East (South Parade Pier to Speakers’ Corner), we will be installing three ramps leading from the new promenade onto the beach – two small ramps and one big ramp. In this photo you can see the reinforced steel cages being built for the ramps. These reinforced steel cages are placed on top of a pre-poured concrete base called the blinding. The concrete which makes the slope is then poured on top of these cages within a wooden frame built by our carpenters. The purpose of the steel is to give the concrete strength and prevent it from cracking.

This week we say a fond farewell to Sophie, who is moving on from the Southsea Coastal Scheme (here on the right with her beloved wave tank!). We'd like to thank her for everything she has contributed to the project.
With her positive attitude, enthusiasm and commitment to engaging with people, Sophie has helped build strong relationships with residents, schools, community groups and stakeholders across the city. Her work has played an important role in helping local people understand the scheme.
Thank you, Sophie, for all your hard work and the lasting impact you've made. We wish you every success in the future.

This photo shows the type 1 (crushed limestone aggregate) material which has been laid as a base layer on the pedestrian ramp that leads to road level from the new promenade. This is ready for the concrete path to be poured here and the red arrows on this picture show the level of the finished pathway on this slope. The existing zebra crossing will be re-opened when this frontage is complete and will be located at the bottom of this ramp.

We have installed a ‘concrete jacket’ near South Parade Pier. This is covering the old retaining wall here which was there to retain the old promenade.
The old retaining wall has been covered in a ‘concrete jacket’ in order to tie in with the aesthetic of the new frontage.

Just a reminder that these updates will be taking a little break for the summer holidays and therefore there won’t be updates on 7 August or 14 August. But don’t fear - our updates are returning from 21 August and will continue fortnightly from then onwards, keeping you up to date on the most important things happening on the project.

Two local artists, Camille Bach and Stephanie Morgan, are the latest creatives to have their work displayed at The Windbreaks outdoor gallery on Southsea seafront. The exhibition opens on Friday 31 July and will remain in place for four months, showcasing artwork inspired by light, water and the coastal environment. Camille’s expressive oil paintings capture the changing beauty of seascapes and skies, while Stephanie’s abstract pieces explore the patterns created by wind, currents and light on the water. Together, their contrasting styles create a striking celebration of Portsmouth’s shoreline.

Hundreds of Volkswagen enthusiasts are expected to head to Southsea Common on Sunday 2 August as Beach Dubbin' returns for another year.
The popular not-for-profit event showcases an impressive range of classic, vintage and custom VW vehicles, alongside a show-and-shine competition, family activities, entertainment, local traders and food stalls. Free for visitors on foot, the event has raised more than £137,000 for charity since launching in 2018, making it one of the South Coast’s most popular VW gatherings.
