Making the most of summer in Portsmouth

Summer is a wonderful time to get out and about, and Portsmouth offers a wide range of activities that carers can enjoy alongside the people they support - many of which are low-cost, accessible and right on our doorstep.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxed day by the sea, a gentle activity to do together, or something new to explore, there are plenty of options across the city to suit different needs, interests and energy levels.

Enjoy the Outdoors Together

Portsmouth’s seafront and green spaces provide the perfect setting for spending quality time together without spending a lot. A stroll along Southsea Seafront, a picnic on Southsea Common, or a visit to local parks such as Alexandra Park or Canoe Lake can offer a calm, flexible environment where you can go at your own pace.

These spaces are ideal for carers who may need easy access, space to take breaks, or a relaxed setting that supports wellbeing and connection.

Discover Free and Low-Cost Attractions

There are many opportunities to explore Portsmouth’s rich history and culture at little or no cost. Museums such as Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery and Portsmouth Natural History Museum offer free entry and engaging displays for all ages.

For those who enjoy a day out with more structure, attractions like the Historic Dockyard or BlueReef Aquarium can provide memorable experiences, with concessions and offers often available.

Accessible and Inclusive Activities

Portsmouth continues to offer inclusive activities, including options for people with additional needs. The Local Offer highlights accessible sessions such as adapted sports, cycling groups, music activities and creative sessions for children, young people and adults with SEND.

These activities can be a great way to build confidence, meet others, and enjoy shared experiences in a supportive environment.

Make the Most of Discounts and Support

If you’re looking to stretch your budget, there are helpful schemes available. The Portsmouth leisure card offers discounts on activities such as swimming and attractions, while library membership gives access to free resources - including books, digital media and, for children under 12, free swimming sessions.

You can also find information about affordable travel and seasonal offers to help make days out more accessible.

A Gentle Reminder

Taking time for yourself and enjoying small moments together can make a big difference. Whether it’s a short walk, a shared activity, or simply sitting by the sea, these moments can support both your wellbeing and the person you care for.

If you would like support finding activities that suit your individual circumstances, the Portsmouth Carers Service team is here to help.

Celebrating Carers Week in a Centenary Year

This year’s Carers Week (8–14 June) brought the community together to recognise, support, and celebrate unpaid carers across Portsmouth. With the national theme of Building Carer Friendly Communities, the week focused on how we can all play a role in making everyday places more understanding, inclusive, and supportive for carers.

Portsmouth 100 Carers Photography Competition

A highlight of the week was the Portsmouth 100 Carers Photography Competition, which invited carers to capture what a carer-friendly community means to them. Through powerful and personal images, carers shared moments of calm, connection, kindness, and joy in their caring roles.

Submissions showcased the places and experiences that help carers take a breather, feel supported, and stay connected to their community. The competition was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Portsmouth’s centenary while giving carers a creative voice and platform to tell their stories.

The photographs were also featured as part of our Carers Week celebrations, helping to raise awareness and highlight the importance of recognising carers in all aspects of community life.

Another key initiative this year is our Carer Friendly Community Pledge campaign, which invites local organisations, businesses, and community groups to take meaningful action to support carers.

Participants are encouraged to share simple but impactful pledges - whether that means offering a warm welcome to carers, improving access to information, creating inclusive spaces, or recognising carers in the workplace.

These pledges reflect a shared commitment across Portsmouth to make a difference. From providing supportive environments and activities, to improving signposting and access to services, each action contributes to building a more carer-friendly city.

As part of Portsmouth’s centenary celebrations, we are aiming to gather 100 pledges, creating a growing network of organisations dedicated to supporting carers.

Thank You

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who got involved in Carers Week this year - whether by sharing a photo, making a pledge, attending an event, or helping to spread the word.

Your support is helping to build a stronger, more inclusive Portsmouth where carers are recognised, valued, and supported every day - not just during Carers Week.

Room One Loved Ones Group – New Times from July

We’re pleased to share some important updates to our Room One Loved Ones Group, designed to make the group more accessible and flexible for the carers we support.

Following feedback from attendees, the group will continue to run twice a month from July, but with a new format:

  • 2nd Friday of the month (10:00 – 12:00)
  • NEW: 3rd Tuesday of the month (17:30 – 19:30)

This new evening session has been introduced to support those who may find it difficult to attend during the daytime, helping more carers access peer support at a time that works for them.

A supportive space with shared understanding

The Loved Ones Group offers a welcoming and informal space for carers and family members supporting someone of any age who is autistic or neurodivergent.

The sessions provide an opportunity to:

  • Share thoughts, feelings and experiences
  • Connect with others who truly understand
  • Gain insight and encouragement from people with lived experience

Everyone who attends - including the facilitators - brings valuable lived experience, helping to create a friendly, non-judgemental and supportive environment.

Sessions will take place at the Portsmouth Carers Centre, Southsea (PO4 0AD). Entrance is on Francis Avenue, just behind the Lidl Carpark.

If you support a carer who may benefit from peer support, please do share this update with them - or encourage them to get in touch to find out more.

Help Shape New Support for Younger People Living with Dementia and Their Carers

Portsmouth Carers Service is working in partnership with the Remind Dementia Support (Solent Mind) to develop new support opportunities for people aged approximately 50-70 who are living with early-onset dementia, and for the family members and friends who care for them.

We know that the experience of living with dementia at a younger age can be very different. Many people tell us that existing dementia services and activities are often designed with older adults in mind and may not always feel relevant to their stage of life, interests, or circumstances.

That's why we're keen to hear directly from carers and from people living with dementia. Together, we want to co-produce groups, activities, and support that are meaningful, accessible, and tailored to the needs of this age group.

We're particularly interested in learning:

  • What support is currently working well.
  • Where there may be gaps in local services or activities.
  • What types of groups, events, or opportunities would help improve wellbeing, social connection, and quality of life.
  • How we can create activities that are engaging and age-appropriate for both carers and the people they support.

Whether you are caring for someone with early-onset dementia, living with dementia yourself, or simply have ideas you'd like to share, we'd love to hear from you.

Your experiences and insights will help shape future support in Portsmouth and ensure that services are designed around the needs of those who use them.

For more information or to express your interest in getting involved, please contact Jo at Portsmouth Carers Service. She would be delighted to hear your views and work together to develop support that truly meets the needs of younger people living with dementia and their carers.

Carer Story Spotlight

Karen's Journey Back to Confidence

When Karen's mum had a stroke, life changed dramatically. Suddenly balancing caring responsibilities, financial worries and her own wellbeing became overwhelming, leaving Karen feeling isolated and unsure where to turn.

Everything began to change when she discovered Portsmouth Carers Service and Advice Portsmouth. Through personalised support, practical advice and opportunities to connect with other carers, Karen found the confidence to look after her own wellbeing alongside her caring role.

Karen's inspiring story highlights the importance of reaching out for support and the difference that understanding, compassionate services can make when caring feels overwhelming.

If you're caring for a family member, friend or neighbour, Karen's experiences may resonate with you and remind you that you don't have to face caring alone.

Take Part in the Carers UK State of Caring Survey 2026

Every day, unpaid carers provide vital support to family members, friends and neighbours - often putting the needs of others before their own. But who speaks up for carers?

The Carers UK State of Caring Survey 2026 is now open, giving carers across the UK an opportunity to share their experiences and help shape future support, services and policy. The survey is the UK's most comprehensive annual piece of research into the lives and experiences of unpaid carers and is used by governments, local authorities, health and social care services, charities and carers organisations to better understand the realities of caring.

Last year, more than 10,500 carers took part, providing valuable evidence that helped influence national discussions on issues including adult social care, Carer’s Allowance, employment support for carers and the NHS. Carers' experiences have contributed to policy reviews, campaigns and national media coverage, helping to ensure that carers' voices are heard.

By completing the survey, you can help highlight the challenges and successes of caring, including the impact on health, wellbeing, finances, work and daily life. Every response helps build a clearer picture of what carers need and strengthens the evidence used to campaign for positive change.

The survey takes around 30 minutes to complete, but questions can be skipped if you're short on time. Even if you don't finish the survey, any responses you have already provided will still be saved and contribute to the research.

The State of Caring Survey 2026 is open until 11.59pm on Sunday 9 August 2026.

If you are an unpaid carer, we would encourage you to take part and make your voice count.
