Your North Portsea Scheme update

 Great news! The coastal path at Milton Common is open again and ready to enjoy.
We’ve resurfaced over 1km of the path to keep it in good condition as we near the completion of the North Portsea Coastal Scheme, following nearly 12 years of work to protect our coastline.
You may still see some fencing in place for a short time while the new surface sets, this should be removed within the next couple of weeks, weather permitting.
Thanks for your patience while we completed this work, we hope you enjoy the improved path.

At Ports Creek, you can see from this photo that the team have been busy finishing off the topsoil. It’s the same approach we mentioned in the last edition; a layer of topsoil, geotextile, then more topsoil, with coir rolls installed at the base of the embankment.

There’s just a small area left for us to sort at the back of the embankment near the Ports Creek car park. We’ll trim back the sticky-out bit so it ties in with the rest of the slope, and then it’ll be finished off with grass and vegetation.

Meanwhile down the creek, we’ve made good progress on the woodland drainage, helping naturally low spots drain into the moats. We’re connecting pipes to these low areas so water can flow under the path and out into the moat.
In this photo, you can see a headwall made from soil bags, preventing water from seeping into the ground and guiding it into the pipes.

And in this photo you can see all the stones; this is a swale. A channel has been dug out in the natural low spots, lined with a geotextile, and then filled with stones. The idea is that water will naturally move through the channel, be slowed by the stones, directed to the pipe by the headwalls, and then pass under the path before flowing out the other side into the moat. In this area we have three swales and seven crossings.

The North Portsea Coastal Scheme just love the environment, and everything connected to it. We are really happy to see our wildflowers thriving. They don't just look pretty, they enhance biodiversity and additional habitat for pollinators.

Over the way at Hilsea Lido, they are busy preparing for the summer season. There's lots of activities on their website including paddle board yoga, aqua aerobics, inflatable sessions and much more!
