Reminder - Understanding smoking and vaping among 11-15 year olds: school survey closing 14 March 2025
|
|
 |
Thank you to those who have already completed the survey. If you haven't and are able to, there is still time to provide your feedback.
It should take 5-10 minutes to complete and will close on Friday 14 March 2025.
The insights gathered will help to inform support for young people who are affected by smoking, vaping or both and our responses to it.
If you have any questions about the work, please contact smokefreeportsmouth@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

Service children’s pupil voice event |
|
 |
On 23 January 2025, 120 service children from naval families between the ages of six and thirteen attended a unique event at the University of Portsmouth. The children, representing 22 schools across Portsmouth and Gosport, attended a variety of art-based workshops in order to explore their experiences of a military lifestyle.
Their voices were clearly heard and will inform these schools’ ‘pledges’ to tailor their provision for this important group of, often, unheard children in our schools.

Languages updates |
|

1. Celebrating Languages Week
The week of 17 - 21 March 2025 is our first ever, citywide Celebrating Languages Week in Portsmouth. During the five days of celebration, schools can choose to do as little as learning how to say hello in another language to a huge week-long focus. You decide!
To get you started, there is a competition on the theme of 'friendship'; an event from The British Council; a recipe book to contribute to ('A Taste of Portsmouth') and lots more ideas.
'Members' of EMAS already have a wealth of ideas and resources in the EMAS section of your school's shared area. These can all be adapted to suit the age and stage of your learners and are all in the folder '2. Displays and teaching support'
- Language taster PowerPoints in 18 community languages - learn some key words and phrases, all with pronunciation buttons, in your chosen language
- Language of the half term in 30 community languages - display materials and presentations
- Signage for around the school in different languages, plus 'In our class/tutor group we speak…' posters for the classroom doors for you to fill in and celebrate the languages your own children speak
- Fun facts about languages posters and 'fun with words' resources - idioms, sounds (woof, meow etc.) and unusual words all in different languages
- A display on the benefits of being multilingual
We also have dozens of books in first language in your EMAS folder and a large library of bilingual books in hard copy available for you to borrow. Please contact jordane.faye@portsmouthcc.gov.uk to arrange delivery.
2. City of Languages partners' meeting
Everyone is warmly invited to a wider partners' meeting for Portsmouth City of Languages, taking place on Friday 21 March 2025 from 1pm - 2pm, during our first ever citywide Celebrating Languages Week. Please see the agenda for details. The meeting is taking place on Teams: Join the meeting now
3. Twinning with schools at home or abroad
Do you have a link with another school in the UK or abroad? If so, we'd love to find out all about it! Please email rubi.giles@portsmouthcc.gov.uk and let us know where you are twinned with and what is the focus of the work e.g. MFL, geography, PSHE etc. We are currently exploring new opportunities for this across the city but would like to find out what is already happening.

Ofsted report for Medina Primary School |
|
 |
A new Ofsted report for Medina Primary School is now available following a school inspection on 14 January 2025. The school received 'Good' judgements for quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, leadership and management, and early years provision, and 'Outstanding' for personal development.
Inspectors highlighted:
"A strong, inclusive ethos is at the heart of this school. It is committed to serving and welcoming all pupils and their families. The care given to pupils by staff means that pupils love coming to school. Pupils embrace the school’s rules to help them make the right choices, meeting the school’s high expectations for behaving well."
Outdoor learning update from Hampshire Outdoors |
|
 |
The latest Hampshire Outdoors outdoor learning newsletter is now available. This edition looks at the weather and ways to encompass this into your school day and outdoor learning.
Amongst other things, there is also a great article on the development of an outdoor classroom space at Weeke Primary School and a lesson plan from colleagues at Runways End Outdoor Centre.
You can also find the newsletter, along with lots of other resources to support you delivering the curriculum outdoors, on the Trailblazer website.
Building a family life through fostering |
|
 |
|
Love knows no bounds, nor does fostering. We believe that personal qualities, not gender or sexual orientation, define a great foster carer.
To mark LGBTQ+ Adoption and Fostering Week (3-9 March), we're highlighting the urgent need for more foster carers, and asking individuals and couples in the LGBTQ+ community to consider the impact they could have on a young person’s life through fostering.
Could you or someone you know build a family life through fostering?
