Young Carers Action Day - 12 March 2025 |
|
 |
Young Carers Action Day is a Carers Trust event that takes place annually. In consultation with young and young adult carers, this year's focus is on giving young carers a break, from:
- Their caring responsibilities.
- The lack of understanding about young carers and the impact their responsibilities may have, from education settings and employers, which can lead to young and young adult carers not being supported effectively with their learning or in their career.
The Carers Trust have created some initial resources that can be used in schools and colleges to promote the event. Keep checking the website, as they plan to publish more resources nearer the event.
Portsmouth Young Carers Service will also be sending out some additional activities in mid-February, that you can use to help raise awareness of young carers and the amazing things they do to support their loved ones in your school or college.
Here are some initial ideas:
- Plan a young carers assembly or share information in tutor groups, so that everyone in school knows about young carers, who they are and where young carers can get support in your setting and beyond.
- Ensure that Young Carers Action Day is promoted on your newlsetters, website and/or electronic noticeboards.
- Discuss young carers in your staff meeting that week, and ensure that you always have awareness raising information about young carers in your staff room.
- Plan a special event with your young carers… and ask them about how they feel Young Carers Action Day 2025 should be celebrated in your school/college.
You can contact Portsmouth Young Carers Service for resources, including PowerPoint assembly presentations and information for your website, that you can personalise for your school/college. Email: youngcarers@portsmouthcc.gov.uk

 1. Submit your nominations for the Teach Portsmouth Awards
The Teach Portsmouth Awards returns to Portsmouth Guildhall on Thursday 12 June 2025 to celebrate the outstanding contributions education professionals make to the lives of children and young people in the city.
Nominations must be submitted through the online form. Please be aware that the form does not save entries as you go. You can download a Word document template which allows you to collate entries before transferring them into the form.
Our FAQ guide to nominating for schools and colleges explains everything you need to know about the process, from how to submit your nomination to what the shortlisting panel looks for in a successful entry. Nominations close on Wednesday 12 February 2025.
2. Help us promote the Teach Portsmouth Jobs and Opportunities Fair
The Teach Portsmouth team need your help in attracting parents/carers to attend the Teach Portsmouth Jobs and Opportunities Fair at Portsmouth Guildhall on Wednesday 26 February 2025 from 10am to 2pm. Exhibitors will promote jobs, training and volunteering opportunities in schools and colleges across the city.
We are asking schools and colleges to share this information with parents and carers to increase interest and awareness about careers in education. Please include this suggested text and image in your school newsletters and social media pages. A poster to print or share online is also available.

Pupils feel safe here. The atmosphere is typically happy, kind, respectful and calm. Behaviour is much improved. Bullying and discrimination have reduced considerably. Pupils know adults will help if they have a problem."
Celebrating Languages in Portsmouth Week |
|
 |
We are excited to announce Portsmouth’s first-ever Celebrating Languages in Portsmouth week and would love as many schools as possible in the city to participate.
This special week will take place from Monday 17 to Friday 21 March 2025, aligning with the University of Portsmouth's Global Week. It will be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the wealth of languages and cultures that enrich the lives of so many of our learners.
Whatever your level of involvement, we invite all our education settings to join us in this celebration and to reflect on how it could grow in the coming years to truly honour the vibrant tapestry of languages and backgrounds we are privileged to have in Portsmouth.

Could you help find a home for Peter? |
|
 |
Foster Portsmouth is urgently seeking a new loving foster home for a young person in our care.
15-year-old Peter*, whose favourite hobbies are playing video games such as Fortnite and using his 3D printer, is living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
We've not yet been able to find a foster carer with quite the right experience and skills to meet Peter’s needs. So, we are appealing for new potential carers or those currently with another fostering agency to step forward to explore if they could provide him with the support and care he deserves.
Peter shared with us: “I like doing what other people can do, despite the fact that I am in an electric wheelchair. I do wheelchair football, and I like watching films and board games, and listening to music whilst I am doing something such as Lego or playing my video games."
If you think you could give Peter, or another young person, the care and love they deserve, please read on and learn more about how you can make a difference.
