Bringing bright to the site

colourful modular shower units

Happy New Year to you all!

The lido team had a well earned break over Christmas, but are now back on site and making great progress.

In our last update, we shared a glimpse of the modular shower units in transit. If you’ve strolled around the area recently, you might have noticed they’re now in place. While they currently stand out amidst the ongoing construction, their colours have been chosen to fit beautifully with the beach huts (changing rooms), the pool, and the surrounding landscape once everything is complete.

Before the units arrived, the team prepared the ground, ensuring the pipework was ready. Now that the units are positioned in their permanent spots, the final steps are plumbing them in and connecting gas and electricity.

Stopping the leak from the creek

plant room

In our last update, we mentioned that the plant room kept filling with water from the creek.

The team has tackled this by concreting the floor to create a solid base. Next, they’ll be reinforcing the structure by adding 300mm of concrete around all the walls and raising their height. This work will ensure the plant room is secure and ready to house the new state-of-the-art filtration equipment.

It's not an alien invasion

tanks

On the topic of equipment, you may have spotted three large tanks on-site. These are filtration tanks destined for the plant room. Once installed, they’ll play a crucial role in keeping the pool water sparkling clean by filtering out impurities.

In earlier updates, we showed you the black pipes emerging from the pool. These will connect to the plant room, where the water will pass through the filtration tanks before returning to the pool via pipes in the base. This system will mean crystal-clear water for everyone to enjoy!

The carbon cost of this project

concrete pool

The pool concreting is finally finished (although we are currently pumping the rain water out of it), and some of you have been asking about the carbon impact this project has.

Although the construction has used a significant amount of concrete, the renovated pool has a design life of 80+ years, meaning the lido will be 170 years old before significant work like this needs to be carried out again!

We've also incorporated the concrete existing pool structure into the new design, which meant we didn't have to demolish the old structure, which would have a significant carbon cost.

The refurbished lido will be landscaped, including removing large areas of concrete that will be replaced by natural surfaces that encourage sustainable drainage. There'll also be appropriate planting to encourage wildlife.

Footbridge closure

Update on Peronne Road Footbridge closure

Unfortunately, there has been a slight delay during the construction work being carried out at Peronne Road footbridge, due to adverse weather conditions. As a result, the temporary overpass that the project is providing to minimise disruption whilst the sea defences are being built will not be ready for the original scheduled date of 13 January.

The footbridge will remain closed until further notice. Please follow the official diversion routes indicated by signage near the bridge and on the information boards.

The North Portsea Coastal Scheme team is working hard to complete the work as soon as possible and will provide an update on the new reopening date to provide a shorter route once it has been confirmed.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and patience during this time.
