No respite with this busy site

overview of pool construction site

It was so busy on site this week, that we've only been able to take some photos from the top of the lido building - but, we've got plenty to show you!

Despite the cold weather the team are soldiering on working on lots of different things as you can see from this photo...

Yes, we keep talking about concrete, but by next week all the concreting will be finished - which is so exciting! All that's left (at the time of this photo) is the two ends of the pool, and the walls of the balance tank...and then we will stop talking about concrete...maybe!

Shower plumbing incoming

In this photo, just behind the digger you can see the flat, shingled area where the modular shower units are going to be placed. They're due to arrive next week.

The soggy room of doom

image of a flooded plant room

It's not all sunshine and rainbows on the site. We haven't talked much about the plant room since we've emptied it - back in 1935 when the lido opened, we knew that the water originally came from the sea to fill the pool, which was filtered through cast iron tanks filled with sand. At some point, it was switched to fresh water, and the location of these original sea water pipes was not recorded anywhere.

Once the plant was removed, we uncovered them for the first time in decades (you can see the tops of them in the middle of the picture above, below the first beam). We have capped them, but the immense pressure of water when the tide is in still forces water through into the plant room! The team have a plan to stop this happening by raising the floor level and encasing them in concrete. They will be working on this area in the new year.

A big step on the ground prep

In the area against the lido building the team have been busy working to prepare the ground for the installation of 20 beach huts. These little huts will be used as changing rooms.

Coastal scheme going full steam

The final phase 5 of the North Portsea Coastal Scheme, at Ports Creek, is under way and planned to be completed in December 2025. Visitors can still get to Foxes Forest on the southern side of the moat.

Peronne Road footbridge will be closed from 2 January 2025 to allow for the construction of a temporary overpass until 12 January 2025 - at the latest.

Following this closure, the overpass will remain in place for the duration of the project, allowing site traffic to move east to west, whilst maintaining pedestrian access to the footbridge. The footbridge next to the railway line, further east along the creek, will then be closed for the duration of the work. Diversions are in place and will be signposted on the footbridge and our info boards.
