Make it smooth

concrete being buffered in a pool construction

Since our last edition, the team have been working flat out to get the remaining concrete poured before winter sets in. You can see in here the fresh concrete that has been poured onto the base of the pool, bringing it to its final level. The team used a machine called a float trowel to level out the concrete so it's nice and smooth. After this stage, it's ready to be rendered.

Shaping the sides

a pool filled with concrete

As the base of the pool has had the final concrete pour, the team are now preparing the sides of the pool. The steel work is going in, and then the sides will be concreted too, which will be a little bit more tricky...read more below.

Building in strength

shutter

To concrete the sides the team will need to use this 'shutter', which is a temporary support to hold the wet concrete in place until it hardens and sets. If this wasn't used the concrete wouldn't set in the right shape, but also wouldn't have the strength it needs.

Piecing it together

pipes laid out on shingle

The team are working on the filtration system pipework which will all be underground eventually, connecting the water tank, the pool and the plant room.

And finally...A big thank you to the construction team at the lido, who helped when someone's keys got locked inside their car with their child in the car park! They created an ingenious solution including a magnet to retrieve the keys, saving the day and sending them on their way.

We Shine at Hilsea Lido

Forged in Water is an audio-visual installation that explores the surreal world of artificial reefs.

Join us at We Shine Portsmouth from 21 to 23 November for a celebration of creativity, culture, and community! Experience stunning light art installations by local and national artists as they transform the city. The Hilsea Lido area is hosting three installations as part of We Shine Portsmouth, all free to attend:

  • Forged in Water; Limbic Cinema: This is an audio-visual installation that explores the surreal world of artificial reefs. Holographic-style visuals depicting human-made structures beneath the ocean are revealed on transparent, airborne water particles, creating an ethereal and immersive display.
  • A Hand, Held; Thomas Buckley: A collaboration between Thomas Buckley and Tom Hobden “A Hand, Held” uses custom made capacitive touch sensors to trigger bespoke computer generated visuals based on the connectivity between two or more people. This work is made in collaboration with young people from Hilsea.
  • Rhythm is a Dancer; Liam Quinn: Rhythm Is A Dancer is an interactive audio-visual installation, inviting the public to drum out their own beats on customised oversize drums. Surrounding the drums is a screen, displaying an ever-changing visual projection which responds to the drums and the drummers.

All these events run from 5-9pm on all three days of We Shine. This is just one part of the festival - there are events happening all across the city!

Pushing forward at Ports Creek

view of coastal defence work

The North Portsea Coastal Scheme team continue to gear up for work on the new sea defences at Phase 5 - Ports Creek. The contractor, Knights Brown, have made excellent progress clearing the area from Portsbridge roundabout down to Peronne Road.

In the photo, you can see that they are keeping closely to the footprint of the new defences, only removing vegetation where absolutely necessary which doesn't affect the wider Foxes Forest area.

If they have to remove any trees, they will plant an equal or greater number once the work is done. They have also moved around 650 m² of a species rich turf to other parts of the project, particularly to the completed phase 2 at Milton Common, to protect and preserve the existing areas of native grasses.

Could you make a splash?

Lido visualisation at night

Portsmouth City Council is working with Avison Young to help find the right tenant to take on Hilsea Lido, once the transformational renovation project is complete.

Alongside the totally refurbished of the 67m long pool and surroundings, with new outdoor changing facilities and showers, the tenant will also take on the original lido changing rooms, splash pool and the former Blue Lagoon café.

These offer the opportunity for future transformation by a tenant to create complementary facilities to enhance the wider offer and development of a destination landmark facility for the community, residents of Portsmouth and the public alike.

Sally forth at the Sally Port!

Sally port upgrade

The council's Hilsea Lines ranger has been busy around the Sally Port area. We'll hand over to our friends at Casemates to tell you more, who posted about it on their Facebook page:

Big shoutout to the Hilsea Lines Ranger and team for the recent upgrades at the Sally Port! 🙌🐾 They’ve cleared the way with a new footpath and kissing gates, making it easier for buggies and wheelchairs to visit. 🌿 The brambles are gone, revealing the historic gun ramp of the Hilsea Lines monument!

Great work from the team, looks ideal for an autumn amble with refreshments after at Casemates Cafe!
