New Carers Trust report: Caring and classes: the education gap for young carers |
|
 |
The Carers Trust have published the findings of a major study into the impact of caring on young carers’ education in their report Caring and classes: the education gap for young carers. The report sets out details of young carers’ educational attainment and opportunities in England in 2024 and gives 14 key recommendations, two of which relate directly to education providers:
- All education providers should be required to appoint a young carer or student carer lead.
- All education providers should be required to implement a young carers policy which clearly sets out the support available to young carers within the setting.
The Carers Trust and Children's Society have developed the Young Carers in Schools programme, a free initiative that makes it as easy as possible for schools to support young carers, and awards good practice.
Portsmouth Young Carers Service offers free support for schools developing their young carer provision. This includes:
- Support to review current provision and to create an achievable young carers development plan
- Staff training and direct ongoing support for young carers champions
- Assembly delivery
- Resources, including an adaptable young carers policy and resources to create a young carers noticeboard
- They can also provide support in relation to any individual young carers
For more information, and to make a referral, visit the Portsmouth City Council website or email youngcarers@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
