An initiative to bring together families and organisations who support children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) has been hailed a success after 50 individuals met with 15 exhibitors in the city.
The event was held at the John Pounds Centre on Tuesday 1 October from 2pm - 6.30pm with a networking lunch for professionals held before. Organisations included Portsmouth Parent Voice, the neurodiversity team, NHS services and other groups, who gave advice and information on the day.
Local Offer Live has connected almost 150 people since it launched two years ago, enabling parents/carers to receive guidance from services that matter to them. For more information on Portsmouth SEND Local Offer, please visit www.portsmouthlocaloffer.org.

Teach Portsmouth is working with training providers in the city to ensure children and young people have the professionals they need to excel in the classroom. Teach Portsmouth's upcoming Love to Teach webinar on Wednesday 23 October 2024 acts as an exciting first step, encouraging people to learn more about their teacher training options.
We are asking schools and colleges to share this information with parents and carers to increase interest and awareness about becoming a teacher. If you need something more bespoke, please email teachportsmouth@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
External providers and PSHE |
|
|
External speakers can greatly enrich PSHE lessons by offering expertise, addressing challenging topics, and providing the latest information in their field.
Their involvement can enhance student engagement and bring real-world perspectives into the classroom. However, it’s essential to carefully consider which providers are invited to ensure they align with the values and statutory requirements of PSHE.
The PSHE Association provides comprehensive guidance for selecting and working with visitors and speakers. It’s important to follow this advice to ensure high-quality, safe, and appropriate content.
Key considerations when working with external providers include:
- Ensure all content aligns with statutory guidance and is suitable for the age and key stage of your students.
-
Critically appraise providers by reviewing their agenda, lesson plans, and motives. And remember to ask questions.
- Ensure a teacher is always present during sessions to oversee delivery and maintain a safe learning environment.
If your school has concerns regarding an organisation offering to provide PSHE sessions, please reach out to PublicHealth@portsmouthcc.gov.uk for further support and advice.
