If this would be useful to any of the parents you work with, please discuss with them and send the information requested on the poster to ParentingService@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
Call for help with research into naval service children and young people
Shared on behalf of Jess Glover, University of Southampton
My name is Jess and I am a doctoral student at Southampton University currently completing my doctorate in Educational Psychology. The focus of my thesis is to explore the experiences of naval service children who also have special educational needs. In particular my focus is on autistic naval service children/young people (5-18yrs) and their experiences of separation and deployment, with a goal to draw out implications and best practice for schools and educational psychologists to better support these young people.
My interest in this field stems from growing up as a naval service child myself and experiencing frequent and lengthy separations from one of my parents, and wondering and reflecting as an adult what would have been supportive during these times.
For further information, please see the research poster or visit the website.
Music Man Project Portsmouth |
A new Music Man Project Portsmouth has been set up for young people aged 11 upward into adulthood, with a learning disability. The Music Man Project is a multi-award-winning, world record-breaking international music education charity for people with learning disabilities. It provides accessible music tuition, promotes equal access to meaningful performance opportunities, and raises awareness of the achievements of disadvantaged people in the arts.
Performers learn numerous music pieces over a 2-year period in a fun and scaffolded environment, and ultimately perform in a televised performance supported by celebrities and the Royal Marines Band, at the Royal Albert Hall if they so choose.
Sessions will be held every Wednesday during term time, from 5pm - 6pm. Interested individuals should email rachaelross@portsmouthdsa.org to book a place. Sessions are £5 including a plus one, and parents/carers/PAs are asked to stay, support and join in.

Good Ofsted rating for Ark Ayrton Primary Academy |
Congratulations to Ark Ayrton Primary Academy for achieving a Good rating following a recent Ofsted school inspection. In their report, inspectors highlighted:
"This is a school brimming with high aspirations. The culture and ethos, which exudes from the school’s lighthouse theme, really does allow all pupils to shine brightly. Pupils achieve extremely well and are very well prepared for their next educational steps.
Pupils behave exceptionally well. They live up to the school’s high expectations in the way they are polite, considerate and respectful."
Free period product scheme |
We want to remind all school staff about the Department for Education’s free period product scheme, available to schools, sixth forms, and colleges. This is a crucial opportunity to ensure all pupils who menstruate have access to the products they need, reducing barriers to education and improving wellbeing.
Providing period products in schools is key to creating a supportive, inclusive environment, especially as many children begin puberty as early as age 8. By ensuring products are easily accessible, you can help pupils feel confident and reduce the stigma surrounding menstruation, which can positively impact attendance and participation.
The scheme offers a wide range of product options, including sustainable and reusable products, so schools can choose what best suits their pupils’ needs. With the scheme only confirmed until summer 2025, it’s important to make the most of these resources now.
Please check if your school is making use of this resource, or visit the Department for Education website if you need additional guidance. Let’s continue to support our pupils by making our schools a period-positive environment!
