Tank you very much

backwash tank

10 points to anyone who knows what this is!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a backwash tank (water filter)…and it's BIG!

To put it into context, this is just under 10.5 metres long, which is the same as two elephants, nose to tale. If full to the brim it can hold 50,791 litres of water, which is the same as 25,395 bottles of pop!

This type of water filter got its name because it cleans and renews itself by backwashing -  reversing the flow of water so that it enters from the bottom of the filter bed, lifts and rinses the bed, then exits through the top of the filter tank.

Digging deep

big hole

Okay so 20 points to anyone who knows what this massive hole is for!

Yes, of course it's for the huge backwash tank. The team had to dig through 5ft of clay here, as well as lots of top soil. They also found found three tree stumps in this hole.

Next week the backwash tank will be lowered into the hole and fitted into place, so have a look if you're in the area. We'll try and capture some of this and share it on social media, so keep an eye on our Facebook page.

Mount Mudmore

big pile of mud

Ok...30 points if you can guess where all this mud came from!

Yes okay...it obviously came from the big hole dug for the backwash tank.

Fun fact - when you're working on a project like this (especially in Portsmouth), you have to be very careful that you don't dig up a bomb left behind after the war. Before any work was done on site, there was an 'unexploded ordnance survey' carried out, which came back all clear. The team have a detailed report from this survey onsite, which include maps of air raids and naval bombardments, post WWII photography of the site, examples of land service ammunition, and much more!

It's not just a pipe dream

Hilsea swimming pool

And back to our beloved pool, you can see here that lots of pipe work has now been fitted amongst all the starter bars.

This area still has more concrete to be added, which will be happening any day now.

Look out for Look Up

blue lagoon

As you probably know around the lido site there is some very cool street art.

The Look up Festival is coming back on 14-15 September, bringing world-class talent and a celebration of female and local artists. Like last year, you’ll see a range of new and vibrant artworks and murals go up across the city.

At Hilsea the side of the Blue Lagoon will be part of this. Seekers Create had a fantastic mural here before, but as we all know street art isn't permanent, and it'll be interesting to see what is coming next.

In case you missed the video of My Dog Sighs talking about the removal of his mural at the lido, you can check it out here.
