My Dog Sighs mural thoughts

hilsea lido demolition

World-renowned street artist My Dog Sighs, has worked with Strong Island Media, to record the demolition of the spectator stand at Hilsea Lido, which includes the popular 'eyes' artwork.

My Dog Sighs repainted the eye on the lido wall in February 2023, in collaboration with Portsmouth-based street artist Fark, whose art focuses on spreading positivity. This was part of a project where 10 other local artists painted the 80-metre-long hoarding at the lido, as part of the Hilsea Lines project.

In the video My Dog Sighs talks about how street art is not meant to be permanent, and reveals his future plans for when the lido project is complete.

Plant room - behind the scenes

Plant room collage

Work has started to remove the old the plant at the lido. This contains the pool circulation and filtration equipment, which is used to treat the pool water.

The roof of the plant room was unsafe so part of this has now been removed to allow access. The first thing on the agenda is to remove the enormous water tanks, which are full of sand - take a look at the middle picture above.

All this equipment dates back to the 1930's, and originally filtered sea water from the moat, before being switched to fresh water. All of this will be replaced with state of the art modern equipment, fit for the lido's renaissance next year.

If you're interested in the history of the lido - take a look at this archive video.

Reptile rescue

slow worm

TheNorth Portsea Coastal Schemewill be starting work on the new sea defences in the area around Ports Creek.

This area is home to a range of native reptiles, such as slow worms and lizards. From early summer they have been relocating them from the area in preparation for the construction work.

So we can rescue as many reptiles as we can, vegetation (such as shrubs, weeds and grass) are now being cut down in stages. This will encourage them to move into safe areas, outside the future construction site.

This work will be carried out from June to August. Footpaths will remain open during this time, with some local temporary closures. The main construction work will start in September 2024.

For any questions or more information on the scheme please visit www.coastalpartners.co.uk or contact npcs@portsmouthcc.gov.uk. You can also follow the schemes reptile work on social media -
