Asthma friendly schools |
|
|
NHS organisations across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have developed the Asthma Friendly School (AFS) award. It was developed so that schools are equipped with the knowledge and skills to support children with asthma who are in their care.
Children will also feel more confident to attend school and reach their potential and parents/carers will feel reassured that the school has the training and processes in place to support their child.
The process to achieve AFS status is straightforward. All the resources and information can be found on the Healthier Together website.
For further information, please email asthmafriendlyschools@uhs.nhs.uk.

Good Ofsted ratings for Southsea Infant School and St George's Beneficial Church of England Primary School |
|
|
Congratulations to Southsea Infant School and St George's Beneficial Church of England Primary School for achieving 'Good' ratings following recent Ofsted school inspections.
In their report for Southsea Infant School, inspectors highlighted:
"Most parents are appreciative of what two parents referred to as their ‘beloved neighbourhood school’ and ‘the staff that go above and beyond’ for their children. Undoubtedly, the school is committed to making sure that pupils feel safe, cared for and valued, while receiving the very best education, and that these values are ‘lived not laminated’."
In their report for St George's Beneficial Church of England Primary School, inspectors highlighted:
"Beaming pupils have smiles on their faces at St George’s Beneficial. They know that when they come to school, staff provide thoughtful and kind support. Pupils play happily together. They enjoy asking questions and sharing their school with visitors. The school provides a safe haven for pupils and gives them opportunities to explore how they can play a positive role in society."

Member of Youth Parliament |
|
|
And the winner is... Maheep Kaur!
Huge congratulations to Maheep of Charter Academy for winning the 2024 Member of Youth Parliament elections. Maheep stood against three other excellent candidates, all of whom will continue to work with the Youth Cabinet to drive positive change for young people in the city.
Maheep said "I want to make change happen and the MYP elections are a great opportunity for youths to have a chance to push that change. It has been an amazing experience to be a part of these elections."
Thank you to everyone who promoted this through your schools. A reminder that every secondary school in Portsmouth is invited to have two representatives on the Youth Cabinet. For more information, please contact Jo Morgan at jo@engenderingchange.co.uk.

School grounds and nature opportunities |
|
|
We've had a great response to a questionnaire about school grounds, the impacts of climate-change events and nature connection / outdoor learning. Thank you to everyone who's already responded. There's still time if you would like to complete the questionnaire to help us understand what support needs you have.
One of the areas many schools are identifying is support with funding applications to:
- Deliver school grounds improvements
- Provide opportunities for children and young people to connect with nature
There are a number of funding opportunities that may be of interest to schools:
Following the Easter break, schools who have responded to the questionnaire will be contacted to understand how we can work with them to meet needs they have identified.
For schools looking to plant hedgerows as green screens to improve air quality or get access to free trees for shade, don’t forget to visit the Woodland Trust's website to request your free trees for autumn (the urban tree pack will be good for schools in Portsmouth who may have little space).
