Our next (and last of the year) MATs meetings will be face-to-face, with refreshments and a light brunch provided. We hope to see you there and thank you for taking the time to attend and present this year's meetings, sharing very useful information that equips us to better support our Portsmouth families.

It will allow you to take a close look at the current culture of inclusivity and wellbeing in your school, analyse the needs of your community and provide you with an array of tools to enable you to make it a truly inclusive space for learners and staff.

Nic and her team will be offering a face to face session on Friday 5 January 2024 at The Lodge, Copnor Primary School from 10.30am - 1pm, to get you started on your journey. Moderation training events |

There are two training events coming up for moderation, non-statutory year 2 reading training and statutory year 6 writing training on the following dates:
Although KS1 moderation is non-statutory now, we are still trying to keep assessment standards high in the city. The training will be on the new reading framework and what that will look like in year 2, as well as maintaining and collecting strong reading evidence.
KS2 moderation is still statutory and this training is delivering the new STA training materials to your year 6 staff.

Help us promote the 'Become a teaching assistant' event |

 Teach Portsmouth and other stakeholders have come together to organise this event to help support recruitment of teaching assistants across the city. It will be held on Wednesday 15 November 2023, 10am to 2pm at Paulsgrove Community Centre. The event will be split into two identical sessions, beginning at 10am and 12pm.
We are asking schools and colleges to share this information with parents and carers to increase interest and awareness about becoming a teaching assistant. Please include this suggested text and image in your school newsletters and social media pages. A poster to print or share online is also available.

Portsmouth Pupil Poet Laureates 2023-2024 |

Portsmouth Education Partnership is offering an extended year-long project for prospective Portsmouth Pupil Poet Laureates from years 5-8. Selected pupils will work with local oral storyteller, writer and poet, Dawn Nelson.
We are inviting primary and secondary pupils in year 5-8 to take part in the project, which will culminate in a performance and publication of their work. There are three workshop sessions, which will cover journaling, wordsmithing, and performance. This will culminate in a performance event in June where pupils can invite a friend and a member of SLT to attend.
There are 20 places available. 1/2 places available per school on a first come, first served basis. All sessions will be held at Portsmouth Grammar School:

- Tuesday 6 February 2024, 12.30pm - 2.30pm
- Wednesday 24 April 2024, 12.30pm - 2.30pm
- Monday 17 June 2024, 12pm - 2.30pm

Good Ofsted rating for Trafalgar School |

Congratulations to Trafalgar School for retaining their Good rating following an Ofsted a school inspection on 6-7 June 2023. Inspectors highlighted:
"Pupils thrive and feel safe in this highly inclusive school. Staff ensure that pupils receive the precise help they need. Relationships are highly positive because staff take time to understand and remove barriers to pupils’ learning. Pupils openly share how they are overcoming challenges in the nurturing ‘Relational Practice Community Circles’ they have twice a week.
"The personal development of pupils is exceptional. Leaders have constructed a programme of enrichment and opportunity to provide every pupil with valuable life experiences and skills."

Wednesday 15 November 2023, 1pm - 3pm at the Training and Learning Centre with Caroline Prince and Sarah Hilditch This session, with Caroline Prince from the School Library Service, is about how this service can support schools in implementing the new reading framework.
Wednesday 29 November 2023, 1pm - 3pm online with English consultant Rachel Clarke, Oracy/speaking for learning An introduction to oracy and why it is important, considering children's language in a post-covid context, which covers the theoretical background - how we think through speaking and dialogic and exploratory talk with examples to put pedagogy and theory into practice.
Monday 29 January 2024, 1pm - 3pm online with English consultant Rachel Clarke, Talking and writing like a... (scientist, historian, storyteller) This session builds on our previous work together on purpose and audience, but using oracy to help children write for different purposes. It will also cover work on sentence stems and language structures to support thinking, speak and writing for different purposes.

The Youth Cabinet is a group of young volunteers who seek to represent the views of all young people in the city and work with decision makers to drive positive change. Ahead of the next Member of Youth Parliament elections in the spring, they want to gather as many views as possible.
What's it like growing up in Portsmouth? What are young people passionate about? What changes do they want to see?
Please promote this survey with your students so they can have their say.

As part of the Internships Work programme, a free vocational profiling workshop and preparing for adulthood session are being offered to Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Southampton and Portsmouth professionals.
Vocational profile workshop
Thursday 30 November 2023, 2pm - 4pm | Microsoft Teams
This workshop is aimed at SENCO’s, teachers and college staff supporting young people from year 8 onwards, job coaches, careers advisers and SEND officers. The training will focus on how and when to use vocational profiles to support aspirations of young people and how this process is considered in Education, Health and Care plans. Find out more
Preparing for adulthood

This workshop is aimed at all professionals involved in the creation and delivery of PfA outcomes for young people from year 9. The training will follow on from the previous session in July and will focus on community and health outcomes, with independence remaining central to all. With opportunities to explore best practice and current tools (can be attended as a follow on or sole session). Find out more

Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) training course 2024
The Educational Psychology Team are once again hosting an ELSA training course over six separate days starting in January 2024. The course is primarily for teaching assistants or learning mentors who wish to support children and young people in all aspects of emotional literacy.
Topics covered will be building relationships, social and friendship skills, self esteem, emotional regulation, anxiety, neurodiversity, loss and bereavement and emotional wellbeing. Trainee ELSAs will also learn specific techniques such as active listening, writing social stories and facilitating Circle of Friends intervention.
The training will be held at the Training and Learning Centre, The Portsmouth Academy, St Marys Road, Portsmouth over six days: 17 January, 21 February, 20 March, 1 May, 12 June and 26 June 2024.
The cost will be £575 per delegate. Please note there is also an ongoing commitment to attend supervision sessions following training to maintain the ELSA status. Explore the leaflet for details about the ELSA role and upcoming training.

Sensory integration and therapeutic support within the mainstream classroom context (Inclusion Outreach Service)
Date: Wednesday 29 November 2023 Timing: 8.30am - 2.30pm - combination of theory, workshop and classroom experience Where: Mary Rose Academy - Main Site, Gisors Road Who: Teachers, HLTAs, SEND leadership, SEN(D)CO, assistant SEN(D)CO, EYFS, primary, secondary Maximum number of delegates: 15
Aimed at adults supporting young people with SEN/D, particularly pupils with a neurodiverse/autism spectrum condition profile of need, within the mainstream context.
This course will provide an opportunity to:
- Explore the core principles of sensory integration and how consistently meeting this area of need will benefit pupils
- Consider how a therapeutic approach to teaching and learning can be applied to the mainstream context
- Spend time within the specialist setting, seeing transferrable strategies and activities 'in action'
- Workshop a case study pupil(s) alongside specialists and colleagues
