Three decades supporting Portsmouth's young people |
|
|
Two of Foster Portsmouth's dedicated carers recently reached the remarkable milestone of 30 years providing Supported Lodgings.
Maria and Rob Cross have provided Supported Lodgings care to over 30 vulnerable young people aged 18-24 from Portsmouth who have been in need of emotional support and a safe, secure place to live.
"It is worth it when they're ready to move on… and do it all themselves," Maria shared on the day of the couple's anniversary when they were presented with a voucher so they could treat themselves a little.
Request to support study into ADHD in teenage girls |
|
|
A student at the University College London is asking local primary and secondary schools to support her study into teenage girls and how ADHD impacts them specifically.
"My name is Maria Megalogeni and I am a 2nd Year TEP at UCL. I was hoping to ask for your help with recruiting female students in primary and secondary schools across England, who are over the age of 10. My study is looking into ADHD in teenage girls; through my online survey I am hoping to collect information on how ADHD impacts girls specifically and what this may mean for our practice as psychologists.
Maria has provided a leaflet which you can download that provides more information about the study. The study is ongoing and all participating schools will receive ADHD training as a thank you for their support.

Winners announced at Teach Portsmouth Awards |
|
|
We'd like to say congratulations to the winners at the Teach Portsmouth Awards.
Hosted by Nation Radio's Lucy Ambache, the ceremony recognised the immense contribution of school and college staff over the last academic year.
The introduction of two new categories, the early years and childcare award and governor's award shone a light on those who don't always get the recognition they deserve.
Other categories included the people's choice award that allowed parents and carers to nominate a teacher, learning support assistant or head teacher who had gone above and beyond for them.
A recording of the event alongside photos from the night are now available to view on the Teach Portsmouth website.
Phonics books in need of a home |
|
|
St Paul's have a large selection of books (1000s) from mostly the Big Cat Letters and Sounds range that are in need of a new home. There are also a few collections from Oxford Tree (traditional tales) and Pearson Phonic's Bug range.
We now follow the Read Write Inc scheme and so sadly these books do not match our phonics system. We are hoping another school might find a good use for these and any financial contribution would be most welcome.
You can take a small collection of these books or all - viewings welcome!
We have donated some of these books to our pupil premium families that did not have access to any books - any idea you may decide to take up on for your school.
Please email zoe_killick@st-pauls.portsmouth.sch.uk if you are interested.

Learning with the Community Learning Service |
|
|
Community Learning Services is based at The Learning Place.
As well as delivering Community Learning we provide Family Learning to schools free of charge.
Our courses:
- Recognise that parents/carers are and remain their child's primary educator
- Support the school curriculum
- Offer parents the background knowledge and confidence to help their children's learning at home and encourage independent learners.
- Enable parents to refresh or extend their own learning through signposting onto courses at The Learning Place which may lead to qualifications as well as improving employability.
In addition to our core Family Learning offer, we can also support courses through Multiply funding. A fantastic opportunity for us to work with our community partners to deliver a maths programme to help families with the ever-increasing mathematisation of society.
If you would like to chat about funding to support you to develop a bespoke programme to support the maths needs of your families, increase parental involvement and promote intergenerational learning, please email Sue.Parkes@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

Take part in numeracy volunteers programme |
|
|
National Numeracy in working in partnership with Vanquis Banking Group (formerly Provident Financial) on a volunteers programme through free corporate volunteer led assemblies and supported classroom sessions to Key Stage 2 to primary schools in the Portsmouth.
Schools can express an interest in a volunteer attending their school in the autumn term by completing an electronic form (link below). There are two options:
My Maths Story – a volunteer will deliver an assembly to Key Stage 2 all about their experience with maths. They’ll talk about how they found maths at school, how they find it now, how they use it in their job and life outside of work. They will also ask the children about how they use maths everyday outside of school. The assembly takes about 15 minutes and is based on completed PowerPoint slides we will send to you in advance. We’ve had great feedback from Maths Lead teachers in schools..
Maths in the Real World – this is perfect as a follow up to the assembly or as a stand-alone activity. Up to three volunteers will come into school to assist with this teacher led lesson for one upper Key Stage 2 class. A carousal activity will see 5 or 6 groups of children discuss fictional characters job and hobbies, exploring the maths used in each. This will be followed by an individual reflective activity where children think about how they use maths in everyday tasks or hobbies. There is the option to invite parents and carers in to join this activity too.
