Self-care summer resources |
|
|
The summer holidays offer an opportunity to recharge, but some young people may find themselves struggling without the structure and support network of school.
Anna Freud have created #SelfCareSummer packs for primary and secondary schools. These packs feature a range of creative activities based on self-care strategies that other young people have found useful in helping them stay mentally healthy.
It is also important that staff look after their mental health and wellbeing over the holidays, which is why they’ve teamed up with Education Support to create self-care resources for education staff with tips and resources to support you in looking after your wellbeing.

Climate change project: SOS Save our Solent campaign and Letter to Tomorrow event |
|
|
This May, Portsmouth's Youth Cabinet were successful in winning funds from Save the Children from their Children and Young Peoples Climate Fund. This fund is to raise the awareness of impacts from the climate crisis, and its effects on children and young people.
With our funding we have created the SOS Save our Solent campaign, demanding Southern Water take immediate action to stop pollution in our seas. Additionally, we invite schools to take part in a Letter to Tomorrow event, helping to get young peoples voices heard.
SOS Save Our Solent This is a youth led campaign and we would like your support in this campaign by:
- Screening our campaign video in your school
- Signing and sharing our petition for action
- Follow Portsmouth Youth Cabinet on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or YouTube for more updates.
What are Letters to Tomorrow? Giving youth a platform to explain their hopes for future generations if our leaders step up to protect the environment and their fears about what life could be like if we don’t slow down climate change. It could be a short letter to their friend, their family, their future self, their MP, or local councillor.
The Girls' Network |
|
|
Portsmouth schools are encouraged to sign up for The Girls' Network - an award-winning charity that inspires and empowers girls aged 14-19 from the least advantaged communities, by connecting them with a mentor and a network of professional female role models.
The programme lasts for one year and has a proven track record of transformational impact on girls' confidence, motivation, skills and aspirations.
The charity is already working with several schools locally but are keen to engage more. To find out more, visit The Girls' Network website and contact Rebecca Jewitt, Senior Network Manager for Portsmouth, for a no-commitment discovery call.

Wednesday 21 June 2023 is World Humanist Day, an annual global celebration of human achievements and potential, and a time to recognise our human responsibilities.
The comprehensive Understanding Humanism website provides a wealth of free resources for early years foundation stage to age 18, to support teaching and development of units of work about humanism. On the site you will find information sheets, presentations, activities, films, assessment ideas, and humanist perspectives on a wide range of questions and topics.

Association for Language Learning (ALL) Portsmouth primary hub meeting |
|

How teaching approaches to primary languages and EAL can bring benefits to both
The next ALL Portsmouth Primary Hub meeting will take place on Thursday 22 June 2023, 4pm - 5.15pm at The Training and Learning Centre, Manor Road, PO1 5LB.
In addition to being a staunch supporter of, and frequent speaker at our hub meetings, Marie Allen works as an adviser for the Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS) in Portsmouth. In this session, Marie will tap into her different teaching experiences to look at approaches and strategies used by MFL and EAL teachers within schools, shining a light on the similarities between the two. Importantly, this session will also investigate opportunities to share best practice between these two areas for the benefit of all pupils.
The final part of this session will be a sharing platform for attendees to talk about effective ideas and strategies that they have used in their own classrooms that could be applied to supporting children learning another language in either context.
Please confirm your attendance by emailing lizlord0502@gmail.com.

Portsmouth International Port & Wightlink – 2 Maritime Mondays – Maritime introduction for careers and curriculum leaders |
|
|
Maritime roles pay 50% more than an average job in Portsmouth whilst maritime and logistics roles account for nearly 200,000 roles across the Solent area.
Portsmouth International Port (Monday 3 July 2023) and Wightlink (Monday 10 July 2023) are hosting two evenings (5pm – 7.30pm) where careers leads can hear from maritime employers, tour around the port, see behind the scenes of the Victoria of Wight and learn more about future skills and how maritime can support educational curriculum and careers.
This event is limited in number and will offer a networking opportunity after both events, but will need the individual to attend both evenings. 2 Maritime Mondays is offered free, however failure to take up a booked place would see a small fee to cover costs incurred for the event.
Please send expressions of interest to chris.hatter@portsmouth-port.co.uk.
