New youth counselling service launches in Portsmouth |
|
|
A new counselling service for young people has just launched in Portsmouth. It is open to those aged 5 to 17 (or 24 for young people with special educational needs and disabilities and those who have been in care) and will be delivered through Hampshire Youth Access (HYA), a partnership of youth services operating across Hampshire and led by No Limits.
Young people living in Portsmouth who are aged 5-10 will need a referral from a GP; the Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS); or through the Mental Health Support Teams who work in Portsmouth schools.
Those aged 11 to 17 (24 for those with SEND/care leavers) will be able to self-refer, and referrals will also be accepted from parents/carers or any professional.
The new service, which launched in Portsmouth on 1 May 2023, will offer counselling, mental health and emotional wellbeing advice and support for children and young people who need it. Most of the services will be provided by No Limits, a part of HYA.
- Support for children aged 5 to 10 is offered through play-based counselling. Some support for parents to help their child through the counselling process will also be available. Sessions will be delivered in school or in the community.
- Support for young people aged 11 to 17 (24 for those with SEND/care leavers) includes counselling, therapeutic youth work and group work, and will be delivered in schools, the community or online via Zoom.

Improving mathematics performance: an invitation to join the SPACE programme |
|
|
SPAtial Cognition to Enhance mathematics (SPACE) is a free, evidence-based programme developed by the University of Surrey in collaboration with Loughborough University, University College Dublin and Birkbeck and working with the think tank LEARNUS.
The programme aims to improve children’s mathematics competence through structured LEGO® play. This pilot is funded by the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) and will be evaluated by the Centre for Evidence and Implementation (CEI) to assess the feasibility of rolling out whole-class, teacher-led, structured Lego sessions during year 2 maths lessons.
We would like to invite you to be part of this innovative project.
Project information: Research indicates a relationship between children’s spatial abilities and their achievement in mathematics with the largest gains being for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. If you would like your school to participate, teachers/teaching assistants (TAs) will receive a half-day of training to deliver a six-week (six hours total) Lego programme to year 2 children during the autumn term 2023. Evaluation of the programme will involve a survey of teachers/TAs at three time points, child assessments before and after the intervention, an interview with a teacher/TA and a member of the senior leadership team, and observation of some SPACE sessions.
If you would like further details or wish to discuss the project, please contact r.baxter@surrey.ac.uk. We very much hope that you will be interested in being involved and look forward to hearing from you.

Teaching apprenticeship programme
e-Qualitas is a large provider of school-centred initial teacher training, offering training programmes for subjects such as English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, PE, and primary education. As of February 2023, the organisation has achieved an Ofsted rating of 'Good'.
Their team of ITT consultants specializes in guiding both schools and graduates through the teacher training application process, providing valuable information on funding options, program delivery, and timelines.
The teaching apprenticeship programme (TAP), is an ITT course which allows schools to recruit and train new staff or retain and upskill current staff in a cost-effective way. Trainees achieve QTS and complete the teaching apprenticeship around the 12-month mark while staying employed and working in a school. TAP is a popular alternative to a university-based PGCE pathway into teaching.
Visit the e-Qualitas website to learn more about the teaching apprenticeship programme.
Day in the life of a Portsmouth foster carer
Foster carers Nina and Keith, who've fostered 12 children and are currently caring for four, recently shared their day-to-day fostering experience. "We're very busy, but we wouldn't have it any other way," Nina shared.
"Mornings are timed to military precision. The rest of the school day could involve time to ourselves, housework, training or a visit with our social worker or various professionals involved. We usually pick up the kids from school and either unwind, or do an activity or [clubs] such Girl Guides."
"Most evenings are dinner, bath, and relaxation until bedtime. Then it's time to wake up and do it all over again!"
