Understanding Myself training - Dates for summer term 2023 |
Portsmouth Parent Voice and the Neurodiversity Multi-disciplinary team are offering training on the Understanding Myself programme. The Understanding Myself programme has been developed by Daisy Chain as part of the Autism in Schools Project which is a national initiative. It has been piloted and adapted in co-production with neurodiverse young people and is underpinned by numerous psychological theories and practices.
Understanding Myself is a 6-week programme (1 hour per week) designed to help the young people to understand and be able to communicate their needs. The aim of the intervention is to increase self-awareness; help others understand the needs of the young people and their unique experiences of the world; improve self-esteem and raise confidence. Once trained you are provided with a pack that will contain all the activities, resources, and information you need to deliver the sessions.
We are offering a training session to support you to be able to deliver the programme in school - the training will be one session and the following dates are available:
-
Tuesday 9 May 2023 @ Portsmouth Academy Training and Learning Centre - 9.30am - 11.30am
-
Wednesday 24 May 2023 @ Portsmouth Academy Training and Learning Centre - 1pm - 3pm
To book your free place, please email Neurodiversity0-19Enquiries@portsmouthcc.gov.uk confirming which date you would like to attend.

A Relational and Restorative Practice approach in Portsmouth's schools |
This session is an opportunity to hear about and learn from the progress in 'Relational and Restorative Practice' (RRP) in Portsmouth schools. The seminar will set the scene of RRP in schools and why it is important, followed by a case study presentation from Trafalgar School, a leader in this approach. A key question for leaders and practitioners is how do we share the learning and practice from a model of working well in one school, to shape practice in another? What resources do we need, what strategies can we use, (and what support is needed) to grow novel RRP models that suit the different contexts in which they are developing?
The seminar workshop will take place on Thursday 30 March 2023, 9.15am to 11.30am at the Oasis Centre. The space will be available from 9am to 12pm for networking.

Tesco grant programme for schools |
Tesco are introducing a £5m grant programme, in partnership with Groundwork, to give thousands of school children across the UK a healthier, stronger start in life.
Launching later this year, the scheme will replace the current Tesco Community Grants funding programme and focus on getting schools who lack funds and resources to apply for a grant of up to £1500. This grant will help schools to provide food and activities that can support young people; such as breakfast clubs and equipment for physical activities to support mental health and wellbeing.
Schools can use the funding for various projects, purchasing new books, revitalising playgrounds, support for breakfast clubs/after school clubs etc.

Save the date! Exhibit at the Teach Portsmouth Jobs and Opportunities Fair 2023 |
Do you have a range of non-teaching roles you'd like to promote to a local audience? Building on the recent success of Teach Portsmouth's 'become a teaching assistant' event, the team are now broadening their remit to support the recruitment of all non-teaching roles in schools and colleges.
The Teach Portsmouth Jobs and Opportunities Fair brings together adult education providers, schools, colleges, and academies to Portsmouth Guildhall on Monday 22 May 2023 from 9am - 2pm to promote non-teaching vacancies and share information and advice on employment and training.
We would welcome interest from schools, colleges and academies who would like to exhibit at the event to promote non-teaching vacancies, volunteering opportunities and inspire people to consider careers in education across the city.

Updates for RE subject leaders |
SACRE Places of Worship Directory The Portsmouth SACRE Places of Worship Directory has been compiled to support schools with information on local places of worship that are keen to welcome visits from Portsmouth schools. There are details of who to contact, what is available and acceptable, plus links to the RE Agreed Syllabus 'Living Difference IV'.
Creative resources for KS1 and KS2 The Saltmine Theatre Company's 'Rhyming Bible' is a creative resource for KS1 and KS2 to support the RE curriculum in schools. This hour-long production works well for pupils in school years 1-6 as a resource to support teaching of the Bible story and can be accompanied by an interactive workshop for KS2 pupils. The production might help to support RE if the concept is storytelling, story, message or a concept focused on Christmas and Easter with a Christian context. It may also be of particular interest to Church schools in supporting their use of Understanding Christianity.
Primary RE network meeting The next primary RE network meeting will be held online on Tuesday 16 May 2023, 3.30 - 5pm. It is free for all Portsmouth primary subject leaders and teachers of RE. These network meetings are led by Justine Ball, Hampshire Primary RE Advisor. Please contact laura.browne@portsmouthcc.gov.uk to sign up and receive the Microsoft Teams link.
Brook x Lil-Lets: Big Period Lesson Live available on demand: year 6 and 7 |
Brook teamed up with Lil-lets for 4 years in a row to deliver learning around periods. More than 57,600 people tuned in to the live broadcast, making this their biggest Live Lesson yet. Don’t worry if you missed it on the day, the lesson is now available to watch on demand.
What does the lesson cover? All young people should learn about puberty in a timely and age-appropriate way, to ensure that it is relevant to children’s experiences, and so that they are prepared for the changes they will experience to their bodies, feelings and lives.
Young people should be able to empathise with and support one another during puberty, and so it is useful to teach all young people about menstruation so that everyone is able to have open, supportive conversations about it if they wish to.
