Webinar: How Kooth can support eating disorders and self injury and harm |
|
|
The team at Kooth are holding a free online webinar to help professionals understand how the service can support young people who are struggling with an eating disorder or self-harm. The webinar will take place on Tuesday 21 March 2023, between 4pm and 5pm.
Kooth is a free online counselling and wellbeing support service, available to all 11-25-year-olds in the city. There are no waiting lists or referrals, and young people can sign up anonymously via the Kooth website.
Self-Injury Awareness Day |
|
|
Wednesday 1 March 2023 is Self-Injury Awareness Day. If a young person is struggling with self-harm, we have dedicated guidance on the support available - including top tips and things that could help.
The guidance is designed for professionals as well as parents and carers, and there is also information for young people to read themselves.
If someone is at immediate risk of harming themselves or others, call 999.
Eating Disorders Awareness Week |
|
|
Eating Disorders Awareness Week takes place from 27 February to 5 March 2023.
If you know, or work, with a child who may be suffering with an eating disorder, Portsmouth City Council's SEMH guidance offers detailed advice for professionals, families and young people themselves.
This includes information on what signs to look out for, how you can support a child and who to contact if you need further support.
Supporting children exposed to parental conflict, separation and divorce |
|
|
What Works for Early Intervention and Children’s Social Care (WWEICSC) are inviting school staff (headteachers, safeguarding leads, SENCOs) to take part in a 30 minute online discussion as part of a research study into the role of schools in supporting children exposed to parental conflict, separation and divorce.
A researcher will ask you questions about the role of schools in identifying children and young people exposed to conflict, the type of support that is on offer for children and young people and the places that schools signpost children and young people to for extra support – anything you are able to tell us on these topics will be really useful information and there is no need to prepare anything in advance. We’ll use the information collected to write a report. The research will help us understand the role that schools currently have and to share examples of good practice with other schools, key stakeholders and the Department for Work and Pension (who fund the RPC Programme).
If you are interested in taking part, please contact Di Robertson (di.robertson@eif.org.uk) for further information and to schedule a time for a discussion.
Developing decision-making skills: programme for year 6-7 pupils and teachers |
|
|
Using creative approaches, this innovative new programme designed by Artswork in partnership with BearFace Theatre and funded by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Violence Reduction Unit will support young people and their teachers to explore some of the challenges they might face growing up, empowering them to make healthy decisions.
The programme will specifically examine the risks and impact of knife crime, the dangers of exploitation and other violence and will support them to find their own solutions, enabling them to build positive, healthy relationships and respond appropriately to potentially risky or challenging situations throughout their lives.
The programme will be running from September 2023 to July 2025 and will support schools in their statutory duty to deliver RSHE which enables informed decision making, particularly when faced with risks, challenges and complex situations (DfE, 2021).
This project is funded by Hampshire and Isle of Wight VRU and therefore the whole programme is free to schools.
For more information and to book in delivery dates, please contact Annabel Cook at annabelcook@artswork.org.uk.

Pompey in the Community - tree, books and sports equipment donations for schools |
|
|
Pompey in the Community are currently looking for local schools who may be in need of any of the following items, which we will be able to donate to you through our Premier League Primary Stars project:
- 10x copse tree saplings available to plant, courtesy of the Woodland Trust.
- Selection of free World Book Day books, courtesy of the National Literacy Trust.
- Large Slazenger 'wheelie' sports bags for storing/carrying P.E equipment and kit.
- Kwik cricket sets in large 'wheelie' sports bags - four hard plastic bats and four sets of stumps (made up of pre-loved equipment).
We would love for the above items to go to schools who may require trees for a wild area or to provide some vegetation in an otherwise very urban area, schools who may need extra reading materials for their school library, extra storage in cluttered P.E cupboards or schools who are lacking equipment to deliver cricket in P.E during the summer terms.
Please email Primary Stars coordinator, Sam Cleare, at sam.cleare@pompeyitc.org.uk if you are interested or would like more information.

Thumbs up for becoming a teaching assistant in Portsmouth |
|
|
Councillor Suzy Horton, Dawn MacWhirter, apprentice teaching assistant at Manor Infant and Nursery School and Pippa Andrews, head of primary (interim) at Mayfield School
A big thumbs up was given by those who attended Teach Portsmouth's information event on becoming a teaching assistant. Over 80 people attended two sessions at Central Library on Tuesday 28 February 2023. People watched a series of short presentations from school staff and learnt about apprenticeships and short courses from The Learning Place and City of Portsmouth College.
Thinking Schools Academy Trust, The Wymering School, Trafalgar School, Solent Academies Trust and City of Portsmouth College exhibited at the event, promoting their learning support vacancies. The event also saw the launch of taster mornings as part of a trial with two schools. This scheme sees delegates attending schools to receive a tour and meet staff. The Teach Portsmouth team hope to roll this out to other schools at a wider recruitment event in the future.
If you would like to attend an information event to promote your learning support vacancies, register your interest by emailing teachportsmouth@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
Association for Language Learning (ALL) Portsmouth primary hub meeting |
|
|
The next ALL primary hub meeting will be held on Monday 20 March 2023 from 4pm to 5.15pm at the Portsmouth Academy training centre. Tanya Riordan, senior lecturer at the University of Portsmouth and passionate advocate of languages, will share with us findings of research she carried out recently into an aspect of teaching and learning that will resonate with us all.
Tanya’s talk will focus on tasks and ideas for developing differentiation (adaptive practice) in the languages classroom. The talk will explore the concepts of scaffolding and contingent tutoring, amongst others, making links between theories of learning and effective ways of ensuring that the needs of all learners are met. Practical ideas for differentiation moving beyond the notion of levelling (low, middle, high) will be explored with illustrations that can be applied across sectors and languages.
Please confirm your attendance by emailing lizlord0502@gmail.com.
Planting day at Castle View Academy
Join us on Saturday 4 March 2023 at 10am for a planting day at Castle View Academy.
We will be planting fruit trees and hedges at the school on the day, with help from volunteers from Charles Dickens Community Orchards.
Trees have been funded by Trees for Cities as part of the national tree planting initiative called The Queen’s Green Canopy and they will be registered on The Queen's Green Canopy website to commemorate Queen Elizabeth's reign.
If you are coming along, please wear sturdy shoes and bring your own garden spade and gloves if you have them.
Refreshments will be provided as well as training on tree and hedge planting. Everyone is welcome but children must be accompanied by a parent, carer or guardian.
Fostering that's the right fit for you…
Short-term fostering is temporary care for a child, siblings or young person from just a few days up to two years while we work to reunite them with family or plans are made for their future. This type of care is one option that could enable you to consider fostering around your existing home and work commitments.
Anyone with a spare bedroom could foster with us regardless of their work status, age, gender, faith, ethnicity, sexuality, marital or residential status.
If you are considering fostering, why not contact our team or complete our website contact form to arrange a one-to-one with an existing carer or chat through the options available to find the right fit of fostering for you.
