The Oardacious Project |
|
|
A team of 4 submariners will be setting off on Monday 12 December 2022 from the Canaries and heading to Antigua as part of a transatlantic rowing race. The previous record was 34 days, so it is quite a trek!
Never Such Innocence, in partnership with HMS Oardacious have already led a song writing workshop with students in Portsmouth. This yielded a great sea shanty and was a fun way to introduce the race to students.
The Royal Navy Royal Marine Charity is compiling a set of resources to help schools and individuals to learn about the race, topics of science, physical fitness and mental resilience.
If you are interested in a free workshop, access to resources or a visit so you can get involved in the race and cheer on the team, using poetry, art and song writing, please contact ks@neversuchinnocence.com for further information.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2023 |
|
|
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is on Friday 27 January 2023, and now is the time to plan your activities. There are lots of free resources online to help you lead assemblies, activities or lessons with students.
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2023 is Ordinary People. Here are some projects and resources from the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for this theme:
[Extra]Ordinary Portraits This year an arts project and competition is running for students to learn about an individual affected by the themes of HMD (genocide, identity-based persecution, refugeeism, conflict) and make a portrait of them. Resources are provided that can be used by individual young people to help them get started, or by an educator to lead a session to get a group involved. The deadline to submit portraits to the competition is 5 December, but you are also welcome to take part after this date and have an in-school display of portraits produced.
Ordinary Objects, Extraordinary Journeys (secondary) This is a brand-new Holocaust education website, created by the HMD Trust and the National Holocaust Centre and Museum, with the Jewish Museum in Greece. It features four individuals targeted during the Holocaust, their objects and their journeys. Some of the objects have been photographed in 3D so students can view them from all angles, there are maps, photographs, video clips etc. There is a resource to support schools to use this in the classroom for HMD.
Kindertransport lesson plans (primary and secondary) This pair of lesson plans support all teachers to introduce the history of the Kindertransport – a programme that rescued 10,000 children from the Nazis.
Let us know When you know what you are going to do, please let the HMD Trust know by adding your school to the HMD map, or emailing education@hmd.org.uk.
HAF Fun Pompey set to be a cracker this Christmas!
The popular Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme is back for its winter programme from 17-23 December 2022, for children and young people aged 5-11 and 11-16.

Cost of living crisis
This winter Portsmouth City Council will provide a food voucher to all families of children, in reception through to year 11, eligible for benefits-related free school meals (FSM). Families will receive a £70 voucher for every eligible child attending school in Portsmouth this winter term.
Orders for vouchers can be created from Monday 28 November 2022 and all vouchers must be created by Thursday 15 December 2022. Detailed information has been sent to your colleagues who support the school meal vouchers.
For any queries please contact Christine.Matchett@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
Subsidised breakfast club scheme Family Action run a subsidised breakfast club scheme and are recruiting new schools to their programme. To be eligible schools must have more than 40% of pupils in IDACI bands A-F. There is a fairly straightforward expression of interest form which requires brief information about the school's name, address, NOR and number eligible for FSM.

Sessions are also being planned for the 13, 14 and 16 December. To sign up to one of these later sessions, please email Robert.Anderson-Weaver@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
