Young carers education survey |
|
|
Portsmouth Young Carers Service are asking schools and colleges to complete their young carers education survey. The results will help the service develop links with schools and colleges, establish links with others and prove invaluable as the education offer is developed.
Findings and examples of good practice will be shared in the new year.
If your school has already completed the survey at the Portsmouth Inclusion Conference there is no need to submit it again, unless you have more information to include.
Please send your completed survey to youngcarers@portsmouthcc.gov.uk by Friday 2 December 2022.
Mental Health Support Team school contacts data collection |
|
|
The Department for Education is refreshing the list of schools and colleges participating in the Mental Health Support Team programme. The aim for this project is to monitor the coverage of the MHST programme and know the number and percentage of schools and colleges that work with MHSTs.
As part of this project, the contact details of schools' senior mental health leads will be collected, including names and email addresses. The details that we have and will share are here. If you are a senior mental health lead within a school or college that participates in the MHST programme, please check that your details are correct and amend as required.
Please refer to the privacy notice for further information.
If you have any questions, please email mhgp.delivery@education.gov.uk.
Eating disorders guidance for education professionals |
|
|
New guidance for educational professionals on children and young people under 18 years with eating disorders has been published. These guidelines give advice about spotting the signs of eating disorders and when to refer children and young people to your local community eating disorders service (CEDS) for specialist support.
Eating disorders can affect anyone. The stereotype that someone with an eating disorder is a young, white, underweight female, is dangerous as can result in other people being missed, e.g. males or those who are a healthy weight or overweight. Getting treatment earlier can make a positive difference in someone’s recovery, therefore it is vital to keep an open mind when thinking about who may be affected and act quickly if you suspect an eating disorder.

Provider access legislation - What this means to your school and statutory expectations |
|
|
The provider access legislation is a new law that is coming into force in January 2023. It specifies schools must provide at least six careers related encounters to help pupils understand both apprenticeships and the wider technical education options such as T-Levels and higher technical qualifications.
The statutory requirements are:
- Two encounters in years 8 and 9, two in years 10 and 11 (which are mandatory for all registered learners to attend)
- Two encounters in years 12 and 13 (which it is mandatory the school offer but optional for learners to attend)
Please note that the two encounters in years 12 and 13 are mandatory for the school to offer but optional for learners to attend.
Education Information Services (EIS) FFT Aspire training
During 2022/23, EIS are offering more free training to schools that purchase the EIS SLA, or purchase access to FFT Aspire via EIS. This training will be led by a trainer from FFT. These sessions are designed for new staff or for colleagues who may need a 'refresher' for the FFT's Aspire system.
All sessions will be run via Microsoft Teams and, when they are available, can be booked via the training and events area within the Portsmouth Traded Services website.
Primary schools There will be a session on Wednesday 30 November 2022 from 2pm to 3.30pm. This will include:
- Using FFT Aspire for self-evaluation, based upon summer 2022 pupil-level data.
- Using FFT Aspire estimates to support target setting.
Secondary schools We had hoped to offer a session for your schools at this time but unfortunately, the DfE hasn't released last summer's GCSE data to FFT yet. Therefore, at this time, you cannot book a session.
We intend to run the session for secondary schools in January or February 2023 (subject to both FFT trainers and data availability from DfE).
Once we have a suitable date from FFT colleagues, we will email school headteacher and school admin accounts with the details for booking and we will enable the booking functionality for you on the Traded Services website.
For further information, please email education.informationservices@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

John Lewis shine a light on fostering with Christmas ad
This year's John Lewis Christmas advert is a truly distinctive festive message about caring for others, and emphasizes the amazing work foster carers do every day to ensure children and young people have a positive and loving experience in foster care when they're unable to remain with their own families.
The commercial will raise awareness of the enormous effort that takes place nationwide, as well as in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas, to prepare, welcome and care for vulnerable children and young people who find themselves in need.
