Information event returns to inspire people to become teaching assistants |

Teach Portsmouth is pleased to announce the return of their information events to support the recruitment of teaching assistants in the city. In July, a trial information event saw over 50 local residents attend to find out more about becoming a teaching assistant.
We are asking senior colleagues in schools to help us promote our next event on Tuesday 1 November at Portsmouth Central Library. There will be two information sessions on the day from 10am - 11.30am and 11.30am - 1pm.
Please share this information with parents/carers in email newsletters and on social media. More information about the event can be found on the Teach Portsmouth website using the link below.
Planet League Cup |
|
|
The latest round of Planet League Cup has been a huge success for Portsmouth FC and Pompey in the Community (PITC). Staff and supporters have ensured we are flying high in the standings but need help from our local school communities.
Planet League uses the power of football to get individuals, families, schools and football fans to complete simple everyday challenges that make an environmental impact. Sign up for free and start uploading pictures of your activities to score virtual 'goals' for yourself, your school and Portsmouth FC! Each week of the tournament has a different theme: travel, energy, nature, food and saving. The club that scores the most points wins.
PITC are offering a signed Portsmouth home shirt to the individual account who scores the most environmental 'goals' over the five-week event and Planet League are also offering £20 vouchers to individuals in a prize draw each week. The player who does most actions in the whole tournament wins a £500 voucher towards a holiday in the UK and schools are able to win hundreds of pounds in P.E equipment. As a school there are several pupil specific classroom tasks that tie in with pupil voice, social action and PSHE.
For support in getting your school involved, please contact Premier League Primary Stars Coordinator, Sam Cleare at sam.cleare@pompeyitc.org.uk. Good luck!

LGBTQ+ update from Early Help and Prevention
Changes to Early Help and Prevention's LGBTQ+ service will affect how they work with schools. To keep updated with the service, the referral process is being streamlined. The flowchart helps explain the process, however these are the key principles:
- Once a young person has been identified needing support for the LGBTQ+ service please book an initial consultation via lgbtyoungpeople@portsmouthcc.gov.uk *
- After the meeting the consultant and you (the professional) will have a plan about the steps moving forward, this could include completing a referral or arranging short/medium term support in or around school
*We will be booking regular consultation meetings with schools to discuss potential young people and families and to provide up to date information, advice and guidance as well as booking any schools training. This will happen in the second phase in the new year.
Schools network dates As well as this we will be booking network dates, this will be an online space for LGBTQ+ champions, equity representatives and school staff at any level to meet the LGBTQ+ and each other to discuss strengths, challenges with LGBTQ+ initiatives in their schools. This is a safe space designed for support and guidance and will not be actioned on or recorded. If you are interested in attending, please send an expression of interest email before Friday 21 October 2022.
Opportunity for secondary school to partner with Southsea Rowing Club
Southsea Rowing Club, located near Clarence Pier, Southsea are keen to ensure that membership is inclusive and representative of Portsmouth's communities. The club is planning to apply for the PCC Community Inclusion Grant and would like to partner with one secondary school to run a short programme (January to April 2023) that would introduce a small group of young people (14 years +) to the sport and the club.
The deadline for the grant is Sunday 30 October 2022. The club will write and submit the grant but will need to discuss how the programme could work practically to include details in the bid, in order to understand both the practicalities and the costs involved.
If you are interested, please email Gail Mann at gaillucymann@gmail.com on/or before Monday 24 October 2022 to arrange a conversation.
Healthy Start vouchers
In these difficult financial times we would be grateful if colleagues working with families with young children and pregnant mothers could highlight the Healthy Start Vouchers. These are for low income families on certain benefits from the tenth week of pregnancy until the child's fourth birthday.
Under the scheme the family receive a card with money on it (worth £4.25 per week, or £8.50 for a child from birth to one) which can be used to buy milk, fresh, frozen or tinned fruit and vegetables, pulses and infant formula. The scheme also enables the card-holder to collect vitamins.
Non violent resistance (NVR) newsletter and drop in dates
The first NVR newsletter is available to read, and includes useful information from the Early Help and Prevention team about the NVR approach to parenting.
NVR drop in sessions This is a supportive group of parent/carers who meet monthly alongside colleagues from the Early Help Team. It is aimed at parent/carers and supporters who have completed the full 10-week NVR programme. More information and upcoming dates can be found here.
Private Fostering Awareness Week
If a child is living away from home for a period of time with someone who is not their parent or a close relative and it's likely to be for 28 days or more, this could be a private fostering arrangement and the local authority legally need to be informed.
We are marking our Private Fostering Awareness Week (17-21 October) with a focus on the importance of making a notification if you or someone you know is looking after someone else's child so Portsmouth City Council can ensure their welfare.
