Portsmouth Young Carers Service network meeting |
|
|
The autumn term education network meeting is taking place on Tuesday 18 October 2022, 2pm - 3pm on Microsoft Teams. The session will be repeated on Wednesday 19 October 2022, 3.45pm - 4.45pm, also on Microsoft Teams.
This term the focus is on preparing for the introduction of young carers to the school census. This change will take place in spring 2023. The session will provide lots of practical suggestions to help identify the 'hidden' young carers who are likely to go 'under the radar' in every school and college. We will also discuss the support that our service is able to offer all Portsmouth schools as they prepare for the change.
Participants will also receive an update from our service, signposting to other young carers information and have an opportunity to share effective practice and 'brainstorm' challenges around supporting young carers.
Please email youngcarers@portsmouthcc.gov.uk if you or a colleague would like to book a place at one of the sessions. Please let us know the name of the person attending, their role and contact details. We will then send them an MS Teams link for the session. If more than one member of your team would like to attend, they would be most welcome.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra KS2 schools concert |
|
|
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) warmly invite all primary school children in key stage 2 and staff members to join the orchestra once again for a magnificent (and free!) schools’ concert presented by award-winning composer, James Redwood.
With the full orchestra on stage, James will present a programme of music based entirely around the theme of Midnight Magic, so expect an exciting selection of repertoire that will take the audience on a journey through the night.
|
|
|
We will be exploring the night sky, the marvellous moon and stars, and some magical film music. There will also be James Redwood's new participatory piece, created with schools in the BCP area and built-in partnership with SoundStorm. The piece will use Makaton symbols and signs, so students can JOIN IN with the BSO during the performance!
There is a free CPD session for a teacher from every school attending the concert to teach you the music and words for the participatory items, as well as giving ideas for other ways you can prepare for the concert. The CPD session will be held on Monday 21 November 2022, 4.15pm – 6pm at Portsmouth Guildhall, Lord Mayor’s Banqueting Hall.
Please note that the CPD session is a requisite for your school attending the school's concert. If you do not have at least one representative from your school attending the CPD, then your tickets may be offered to a school on the waiting list.
The deadline for applying for seats is Friday 21 October 2022 – no bookings will be accepted after this date.
Music in school: Needs analysis
FAO the music manager
|
|
|
Further to the citywide training about the new National Plan for Music Education, we have been inundated with enquiries about where next and how to identify priorities for your school.
In response to these requests, we have constructed a needs analysis that will enable you to look at different aspects of your music curriculum, where you are, where you need to be and what you might need to get there.
|
|
|
There are quite a few questions, but if you rattle through I am reliably informed it can be completed in 10 minutes… if you wish to be more systematic, you can take your time, which might be more beneficial! As part of the Music Hub's analysis of what schools need, it would be extremely useful for us to have the results of your needs analysis so we can ascertain what training might be beneficial on a wider scale, which schools would benefit from this and also provide some training with Hub funding where we can.
If you are able to complete the survey by Friday 21 October 2022, that would be very helpful. Please email portsmouthmusichub@portsmouthcc.gov.uk if you have any specific queries.
Help colleagues find their route into teaching |
|
|
To coincide with teacher training applications opening nationally on Tuesday 11 October, Teach Portsmouth has updated their route finder to showcase courses from training providers in the city for the academic year 2023/24.
Teach Portsmouth is a fantastic resource for colleagues who are looking to step up into a teaching role. The route finder is an online tool that presents information on school-based training, university-based training, or a combination of both options.
We would encourage colleagues to share this useful information with staff as well as family members too. The link takes you to the training section of the Teach Portsmouth website.

Information event returns to inspire people to become teaching assistants |

Teach Portsmouth is pleased to announce the return of their information events to support the recruitment of teaching assistants in the city. In July, a trial information event saw over 50 local residents attend to find out more about becoming a teaching assistant.
We are asking senior colleagues in schools to help us promote our next event on Tuesday 1 November at Portsmouth Central Library. There will be two information sessions on the day from 10am - 11:30am and 11:30am - 1pm.
Please share this information with parents/carers in email newsletters and on social media. More information about the event can be found on the Teach Portsmouth website using the link below.

Sharing resources and training opportunities for teachers of young learners of Spanish
María Antonia García Rolland, from the primary education section of the Spanish Embassy in London, has very kindly agreed to travel to Portsmouth to lead an information session on the resources and training opportunities offered by the Consejería de Educación.
María will also share ideas about how cultural events and traditions from the Spanish-speaking world can be integrated into language learning. And she has promised to bring along some motivational freebies too!
As always, this is intended to be an informal and supportive session and we hope that lots of colleagues – involved in teaching French as well as Spanish - will want to take advantage of this super opportunity.
Please confirm your attendance by emailing lizlord0502@gmail.com.
Refreshments will be available from 15:45pm. Our meeting should finish by 17:15pm at the latest.
Participation and progression
Applications to join the Youth Commission now open |
|
|
Applications are once again open for young people, aged 14-24, to join the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Youth Commission. The purpose of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Youth Commission is to make young people part of the solution to tackling crime and improving policing, rather than being seen as part of the problem.
Volunteers will work in teams to:
- talk with young people in their communities to understand their policing and criminal justice concerns
- provide opportunities for young people to inform, support and challenge the Police and Crime Commissioner’s work
- feedback directly to decision makers to influence practice, policy and strategy
- identify the root causes of problems, make recommendations for change and work on solutions
Members gain confidence and skills in networking, presenting and receive training that they can use on their CV’s. They can also use the hours they volunteer with us towards their DofE awards and receive a reference for future jobs.
Commitment involves attending the office in Winchester and online meetings, helping complete the Big Conversation at events, and with peers, and delivering the recommendations conference. Expenses are paid and refreshments provided.
The process will start online with a virtual taster session and then move to an in-person induction for successful applicants.
The application form is available here. Applications close on Sunday 30 October 2022.

Could you give Alex the 'huggles' he craves?
Foster Portsmouth are looking for a new foster family for 'adorable' five-year-old Alex* who, after a lot of changes in his short life, now needs a long-term caring home where he is either the only child or alongside a much older child.
Lego and Minecraft loving Alex thrives on one-to-one attention, 'loves to be loved', and can be extremely affectionate and empathetic. His short-term carer shared: "He really makes you melt. When I was upset a few days ago, he brought me a cuddly toy to comfort me."
If you could give Alex his 'huggles' and indulge his love of the outdoors or provide a loving home for a child like him, we'd really like to hear from you.
