|
|
Kellogg’s, in partnership with Forever Manchester, is offering grants of up to £1,000 to schools to help fund breakfast clubs across the UK and ensure that children who need it most receive a morning meal.
A limited number of grants are available with priority being given to schools that either:
- Have 35% and above of children eligible for pupil premium funding (for England) and eligible for free school meals (Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales); or
- Are based in an area which is classified as falling in the 10% of most deprived areas according to the Index of Multiple Deprivation.
Only one grant per school in each academic year is available. Applications can be submitted at any time.
Young carers to become an identifiable group on the school census |
|
|
Young carers will become an identifiable group on the school census from spring 2023. Portsmouth Young Carers Service is offering a range of free young carers support for all Portsmouth schools to help them prepare for this important change:
- Bespoke young carers awareness raising training. We recommend that this is offered to all staff and governors, irrespective of their roles and responsibilities. Sessions can be tailored to meet the different needs of teams within a school.
-
Assemblies to raise awareness of young carers, the amazing and sometimes challenging responsibilities they may have, and the impact these could have. The assemblies also signpost young carers to support in school and from our service.
- Providing a school census focus at this term's young carers school and college network meeting. Two (repeated) sessions are being held on:
- Tuesday 18 October 2022 from 2pm - 3pm on MS Teams - Wednesday 19 October 2022 from 3.45pm - 4.45pm on MS Teams
-
Emailing key young carers updates and information from our service and other organisations to our 'young carer link' in every Portsmouth school.
Online reporting for the Prejudicial Language and Behaviour (PLAB) toolkit |
|
|
The online reporting for the PLAB (Prejudicial Language and Behaviour) was relaunched in February 2022, having been rebuilt by the Corporate Service department at PCC. Since this time reporting has been sporadic across the city. Upon further investigation, there were issues concerning the links or the links not working. These issues have been resolved, however there are now two steps to the reporting process:
- Request access to online reports - you will be sent a registration email
- Submit your registration form - you will receive a second email with a link to the online reporting tools
If you have already registered, simply go to the Portsmouth City Council website, click on the tab 'My Portsmouth' and navigate to the 'CSC reports' tab.
More detailed guidance can be found on the PLAB webpage.
National Inclusion Week |
|

The week commencing Monday 26 September 2022 is National Inclusion Week.
To mark the week, Portsmouth Music Hub has released two brand new songs composed by the award winning composition team, Be Yourself and Side by Side. These songs focus on celebrating what makes you, you and embrace inclusion and diversity. The songs have been shared across Portsmouth and other parts of the UK, and have already been shared across the USA this week!
Both songs are freely available on 'Song Source', Portsmouth Music Hub's online song bank.

It aims to raise awareness of child exploitation and abuse, with a particular focus on how this may be visible in public spaces. The campaign also seeks to challenge assumptions and stereotypes of victimhood and highlights that child exploitation can happen anywhere, and that any child from any community can be a victim of all types of exploitation.

Composition Challenges: KS2/3 music opportunity |
|
|
Portsmouth Music Hub is delighted to offer KS2/3 students an excellent, fully-funded, opportunity to work with the London Sinfonietta, a professional contemporary classical music ensemble that focuses on commissioning and creating new music, based at the Southbank Centre, London.
Composition Challenges are free resources, designed with non-specialist teachers in mind, that guide students through the musical ideas of contemporary composers and provide a framework for them to begin composing themselves. Schools are invited to return their compositions to London Sinfonietta, and a selected piece will be performed by London Sinfonietta at the Sound Out Schools Concert in March 2023!
London Sinfonietta is running a free online CPD session on Thursday 3 November 2022, 4pm - 5.15pm for Portsmouth teachers interested in using Composition Challenges this academic year. It is suitable for both specialist and non-specialist teachers, and those who may feel less confident at music and composition are especially welcome! There is no need for any musical knowledge to participate in and benefit from the CPD.
Guided by a workshop leader and London Sinfonietta musician, the CPD will focus on using Composition Challenges in the classroom, composing with students individually and in group settings. It will demonstrate practical exercises and techniques teachers can employ in lessons to get students creative music making, an area that has been highlighted as of importance in the new national plan for music education released in June 2022.
To sign up for the online CPD, email: portsmouthmusichub@portsmouthcc.gov.uk
To sign up to use Composition Challenges in 2022-23, complete the short form.
Eco-Schools registration now open |
|
|
Eco-Schools is the largest global sustainable schools programme on the planet with over 59,000 schools registered. The programme has recently been designed to follow an annual pathway aligned to the academic year, with schools registering in September, working through the 7-step pathway, and finally applying for the prestigious globally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag Award in the summer term.
Schools must work through the programme and apply for the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award every year to maintain their status as an Eco-School. This is to ensure every cohort of children is given the opportunity to access the benefits of the programme.
The registration window for the 2022/2023 academic year is open now.

Never too old to change their lives
Many first apply with a set idea of the age of children they wish to foster, possibly due to family circumstances or experience, or a belief that younger children will be less challenging. However, they often go on to discover the rewards fostering different age groups can bring and the greater need for carers for children over the age of 10.
Our children are never too old for you to make a difference to their lives, provide them with opportunities, and help them ultimately reach their potential.
