Exposed!

Promenade slab laying

Concrete slab pouring for the new, raised promenade is coming along nicely.

After laying the concrete, we apply a gel which is washed off after a day or so to leave an attractive and durable exposed-aggregate surface. In the above photo, the brownish-grey slabs show off the completed exposed-aggregate work, while the white slabs are waiting for the gel to be removed.

Stand down

We're laying a very long downstand beam near Southsea Castle.

The beam will be situated under the L-shaped lower promenade walls that will eventually surround Southsea Castle to make up what we like to call The Theatre of the Sea!

Smokin' find near castle

We've unearthed the bowl of a smoker’s pipe that looks likely to originate from Fareham Pipe Makers in the 1800s.

The partial bowl of the clay pipe was found at a depth of 550mm during work excavating a wall near Southsea Castle.

Our onsite archaeologist from Wessex Archaeology conducted a search of local pipe makers from census documents to dig up possibilities for the pipe’s origins. Read more
