The Parenting Service offer different forms of support to parents across the city, such as one off 1:1 sessions with a parenting practitioner, discussion groups with other parents run by a parenting specialist, as well as behavioural management courses available to those with a lead professional (should they meet the criteria).
Information about the services currently on offer is available to download and share: a version for professionals which details some of the referral process, and a version for parents, which provides a broader overview of the service. Please keep this in mind when distributing the offer to others.
Posters detailing the current discussion groups for September to October and November are available to print and share with parents, encouraging them to book on if they wish to.

Update on youth vaping |
|
|
A report from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) concluded that the proportion of children vaping is on the rise, with many being influenced by social media sites such as TikTok. While it is illegal to sell vapes to under-18s, the proportion of children aged 11 to 17 currently vaping is 7.0%, compared to 3.3% in 2021 and 4.1% in 2020.
E-cigarettes were developed as an aid to quitting smoking, hence a perception that vaping is a better alternative to smoking, but for those who have never smoked, vaping is a route into nicotine addiction.
ASH have produced resources for local authorities, schools and parents on youth vaping.

School improvement
Can you help inspire local residents to become teaching assistants? |
|
|
After the success of Teach Portsmouth's teaching assistant information event in June, three new dates for future events have been announced: Tuesday 8 November 2022, Tuesday 28 February 2023 and Tuesday 11 July 2023. All events will take place between 10am and 1pm at Portsmouth Central Library.
We are asking schools in Portsmouth to lend us their staff for one of our sessions. There are three one-hour sessions on each of the dates. Each one hour session will see individuals talk broadly about their role, what inspires them and provide advice for those in attendance. A short question and answer session is also held, giving local residents the chance to find out more about the role.
Teach Portsmouth would welcome interest from schools who are able to support one of these events or sessions by lending a member of their team. We are looking for pastoral, specialist or supervisory support staff who can help showcase the career progression element of the role.
If you are able to help us, please email teachportsmouth@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

Use of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete in school roofs
You may have seen coverage over the school holidays about the use of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in 34 NHS buildings on hospital sites and other facilities, raising the danger of the potential collapse of concrete planks used in roofing. The coverage also referenced the collapse of a school roof in 2018. At the time of the school roof collapse a recommendation was made by the Standing Committee on Structural Safety (SCOSS) that all RAAC planks installed before 1980 should be replaced. These planks were mainly used between the 1960s and 1980s.
The local authority is not aware of any maintained schools that have this type of concrete, and our maintained schools were generally built outside of the period 1960-1980. We would ask academies to follow the DFE guidance on identifying and taking action on RAAC roofs that was published last year. Any school that has concerns should seek advice from their health and safety advisor.
Help your existing staff develop skills, knowledge, and experience plus gain academic recognised qualifications
There are over 30 apprenticeships available in a range of subjects and these have development pathways to progress staff. For office staff, Business Administration L3 to School Business Professional L4, for caretakers, Facilities L2-L6, for managers L5 to senior leader L7, TA's L3 to Teacher L6. All specifically targeted to school environment. An apprenticeship is an ideal route for staff to gain a qualification between level 2 (GCSE) and level 7 (master's degree) to help retain and develop good staff to progress in their career.
Enrolling on a programme will not impact the salary, contract of employment or employment status of the member of staff and funding for existing staff apprenticeships is via the Apprenticeship Levy, so is free to your school. This includes development of staff newly promoted, on fixed term contracts and part time workers. New apprenticeships for this year include Play Therapist L7. This is a qualification at master's level to work towards improving children's mental health.
To find out more, email apprenticeships@portsmouthcc.gov.uk or direct to the schools officer sandra.wilkie2@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

Rewards of caring for children with additional needs
Some children have disabilities or complex health conditions - physical, developmental, learning or sensory disabilities - that result in parents being unable to meet their needs.
We need foster carers with relevant experience to care for these children like 3-year-old Elliott who, whilst he struggles with communication, enjoys going to nursery, being outside, and playing with numbers, letters and shapes.

Reducing parental conflict (RPC) workshop
Tuesday 11 October, 3.30pm - 5.30pm or Wednesday 9 November, 3.30pm - 5.30pm
Parental conflict can be a normal part of parenting and not all conflict is harmful. However, where it is frequent, intense and poorly resolved it can impact outcomes for children and parents. Whilst attending this two-hour workshop, workers will:
- Gain a greater understanding of parental conflict
- Explore factors and the impact on the family
- Look at ways parents can communicate constructively
The workshop has been designed for professionals to increase knowledge and skills around parental conflict. Professionals can use the workshop as a stand-alone workshop or can go on to attend the two-day RPC training.
Please email Kim.Smith@portsmouthcc.gov.uk to book a virtual space on the training. Alternatively, we may be able to come to your workplace in Portsmouth and provide the workshop for your team.
ASD training for schools
Triple A is a free online learning resource for teachers, teaching assistants, SENCOs, and school leaders for supporting autistic and neurodivergent pupils.
The term ‘Triple-A’ represents a set of difficulties commonly experienced by autistic and neurodivergent pupils at school, namely with attention, arousal and anxiety. In this resource, research from the Centre for Neurodiversity and Development at Durham University is shared that shows why Triple-A difficulties have an impact at school. We also share practical strategies that can be put in place to support Triple-A needs (developed in collaboration with the Communication and Interaction Team at Durham County Council).
