Lurking Trolls campaign survey
Message from Lucy Rylatt

Can you believe it's a year now since we relaunched the Lurking Trolls campaign, those 12 months have flown by! I hope during this time you have had a chance to become familiar with and make use of these resources, and that your children have enjoyed them. Whilst we have tried to make the campaign fun and engaging, it's primary mission is to help children stay safer online and improve their digital resilience
We would now like to hear from you as to how you have used these resources and how the children have responded to our Trolls. This in turn will help us to continue to improve their effectiveness and helpfulness to you. I have put together a short survey to help capture your feedback. The closing date is Friday 1 July 2022.
I appreciate how busy you all are and therefore am very grateful for you taking 5 minutes to complete this. If you have any questions or additional comments you would like to make, please do not hesitate to contact me at Lucy.Rylatt@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

Information event: Become a teaching assistant
Teach Portsmouth is organising an information event to inspire local residents to become a teaching assistant. The event is happening at Portsmouth Central Library on Tuesday 5 July between 10am - 12pm.
Meet learning support staff as they share their own experiences from Portsmouth's classrooms as well as a head teacher who will give top tips on applying for a support vacancy.
The Learning Place will be on hand to provide information on training and apprenticeships in education too.
We would welcome schools promoting this event through parent mail and on social media to increase awareness. There is no need to register - people can just turn up!
For more information about the event, visit the Teach Portsmouth website.

The Portsmouth Challenge: Reimaging learning through STEM
The event will take place on Wednesday 6 July from 4pm - 6pm at The Portsmouth Academy.
The purpose of this event is to present to you the model of the STEM approach as developed by Professor Bill Lucas, who you will hear from.
We will also hear from a Drone Pilot who believes that STEM opportunities can change lives of young people. We want to hear what you want for professional development for your staff in the city. The project is at the start of its journey and we look forward to your views shaping that.
This event is suitable for: school governors, academy trust leaders, headteachers, and STEM leaders.

Armed Forces Day - A note from the EMAS team
Saturday 25 June is Armed Forces Day. We know some schools in the city will be marking the occasion - we are the home of the Royal Navy after all!
We would like to draw your attention to the potential impact on our growing numbers of refugees and asylum-seekers in schools with visitors in uniform or talk of combat. Please be mindful of pupils who have fled conflict.
Some children will be absolutely fine, whilst other may find it difficult or traumatic. If you'd like any further advice, please contact rebecca.reeve@portsmouthcc.gov.uk from the EMAS team.
Amparo - support after suicide bereavement
Amparo is a free support service for anyone affected by suicide in Hampshire. The service provides practical and emotional support after bereavement. The experienced Liaison Workers can assist anyone impacted in accessing the support they need, whilst helping with a range of practical matters such as: dealing with police and coroners; helping with media enquiries; and preparing for and attending inquest.
The service is running sessions for professionals via Zoom to cover the role of Amparo and how to refer someone for support.
Making best use of teaching assistants
The recruitment of teaching assistants is becoming increasingly more difficult. It is therefore vital that schools make the most effective use of the valuable resource that they do have. A new partnership training programme between HISP Research School and Portsmouth Inclusion Outreach Service aims to:
- Enable schools to review and reform the deployment and preparation of teaching
assistants, based on the most recent research evidence
- Support schools in the opportunity to re-think/consider and address securing the best
value from teaching assistants helping make sure they can make a meaningful contribution to teaching and learning
- Support schools to plan and deliver high quality training for teachers and TAs
- Model how the use of evidence can have a positive impact on leading change and school improvement through a process of effective implementation executed in stages
