NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Outdoors)

The new NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Outdoors) gives students a career pathway for the marine and maritime industry – combining hands on watersports coaching up to instructor level with classroom based discussion and workshops.

The course follows a syllabus that is both practical and theoretical. This is split 50/50 with hand-on activities delivered at the Andrew Simpson Centre and classroom-led sessions at Bayhouse Sixth Form. Students do not need any prior experience in watersports to enrol on the course and support with transport can be available if necessary.

There is a taster day for interested students (year 10 or 11) on Wednesday 6 April 2022, 10am - 3pm at the Andrew Simpson Centre. The taster day is an opportunity to try land and water-based activities and find out more about the course. Course tutors will be on hand to answer any questions.

Leadership, recruitment and retention

Get ready to complete the Teach Portsmouth annual survey

Teach Portsmouth

Portsmouth schools are invited to take part in the annual Teach Portsmouth survey which is collecting information based on the academic year 2020-2021. The survey will help us gain a better understanding of how we can help Portsmouth schools recruit teachers, as well as informing future teacher recruitment and retention campaigns. The data collected will be kept confidential and will not be shared with anyone outside the council.

Colleagues are asked to coordinate and return only one survey response per school. To ensure we develop Teach Portsmouth to meet the needs of our schools, it is vital that as many schools as possible respond to the survey.

To take part simply click the button below and complete the survey by Friday 6 May 2022.

If you have any questions, please contact teachportsmouth@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.

Raring to Row Atlantic - opportunity for schools

Team Raring to Row are taking on the huge challenge of rowing unassisted 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in December 2022, raising much needed funds for the children’s charity Action Medical Research.

The team is keen to make schools aware of this challenge and are willing to bring the boat they will be using into schools to talk about the challenge.

They are also launching a competition to design the wrap for the rudder. There will be three categories: infant, junior and secondary. The designs of the selected finalists will be exhibited at the Corner Collective on Albert Road and voted on. The theme is 'rowing the Atlantic'.

The winner will be offered a trip out on the water with a guardian in the actual boat and will see the design being photographed during a mid ocean clean!

For more details please contact Kevin Watkins at kevin@raringtorow.com or 07800 766632.

Emotional health and wellbeing

Portsmouth anti-racism toolkit for schools, colleges and early years settings

Following the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and the increasing concerns around the plight of refugees, we are launching the much needed Portsmouth anti-racism toolkit for schools, colleges and early years settings.

Watch an introductory video from Destiny Kennedy, Portsmouth's Member of Youth Parliament. The toolkit explains why anti-racist work is important and contains strategies and resources to use in and outside the classroom.

Anti-racism toolkit

A lesson plan and resources, produced by James Jarrett from The Portsmouth Academy, uses the stories of local Black people to explore: what is racism and how we can be anti-racist? The local stories are part of the work of the Portsmouth Black History Project. These resources are shared with thanks.

Two copies of the toolkit will be sent to all heads. In addition, training is available to support the implementation of the toolkit. This is ideally delivered as a half-day, whole staff, onsite session. If you would like further hard copies of the toolkit or to book in training for this, or next academic year, please contact Sarah.Christopher@portsmouthcc.gov.uk. There is currently no cost to schools for the training or the hard copies of the toolkit.
