Rock floods in for sea defences

Rock delivery to beach at the Pyramids

Spectacular shoreline scenes this week...

Around 5,500 tonnes of rock were offloaded onto the beach near the Pyramids to build new flood defences for the next phase of the Southsea Coastal Scheme.

A total of 140,000 tonnes of rock will be used for the defences along frontage 4 of the Scheme, which stretches from the Pyramids to Blue Reef Aquarium.

The extremely heavy, dense rock was sourced from Norway, with weekly deliveries of around 5,500 tonnes each expected until September 2022.

Frontage 1 (Long Curtain Moat)

Triple treat

The third row of limestone units are being installed to make up the new sea walls.

All that we await now is placement of the parapet units (very top part of the wall, in a plain design) to see the full height of the new walls and how they will look from the sea. Work is also continuing on raising the new promenade.

Community Engagement

Getting tanked!

We took our popular wave tank to Fareham College this week.

This time we were taking part in a careers fair for primary school pupils, run by the college's Centre of Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Training. Thanks to all who came to watch us demonstrate how the new sea defences will work. We hope we encouraged you to learn more about Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths (STEM), which was the overall aim of the event. Read more.

International Women's Day - 8 March

Breaking the bias

Engineering doesn't have a gender.

We have several women engineers on our team. On International Women's Day, two of our engineers, Amy and Gemma, took the time to share their stories and encourage girls into what has been considered a non-traditional career. Read Amy's story and Gemma's story.
