Welcome to our Communication, Language and Literacy Bulletin for the Early Years where in this edition, we are teaming up language, literacy and music!

Some of our Early Years settings in the city were visited by Ruth Morgan from the Music Service last term to take part in rhyming, rhythmical and musical activities alongside Spark the Smallest Dragon.

We are pleased to share with you all, the Spark the Smallest Dragon video

Watch the video with your children, sing along to the songs and enjoy the story.

The Creative Development educational programme in the revised EYFS says, "The quality and variety of what children see, hear and participate in is crucial for developing their understanding, self-expression, vocabulary and ability to communicate through the arts" and the educational programme for C&L states "engaging them actively in stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems, and then providing them with extensive opportunities to use and embed new words in a range of contexts, will give children the opportunity to thrive".

Singing and exposing children to rhyming activities is a really good way to get them playing with words, exploring sounds and having fun. Adding in a story to a song will make the whole experience have more meaning and create more opportunities for children to make connections, hear and use different words and build their ability to become storytellers themselves.

So enjoy Spark the Smallest Dragon and keep singing!
