It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

We are getting into the festive spirit at the Coastal Scheme this week with Christmas trees being erected and Christmas Jumper Day on Thursday to raise money for Save The Children!

We will be open as usual next week

(Mon 13th – Fri 17th Dec) and then closed for the Christmas break

from Monday 20th Dec to Tuesday 4th January 2022.

What a windy week we’ve had here at the Coastal Scheme, with challenges like high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges and one of the highest tides for several years. Local response teams were prepared for the event with closed flood gates at Old Portsmouth, flood boards at the Pyramids Centre as well as closing the Esplanade road gates.

Waves battering the Southsea Seafront have caused some damage to the Esplanade and commercial premises, and remind us of how essential projects like the Southsea Coastal Scheme flood defence project are.

Lining up the limestone

With more deliveries of our Purbeck Limestone pre-cast units, it feels a bit like walking into a giant game of Tetris on site. The units, weighing circa 12 tonnes a piece are being installed most days as we work our way through the front and rear sheet pile lines (steel flood defence wall).

It was a privilege to have the opportunity to speak with civil engineering under-graduates this week about the scheme and their careers after University within Civil Engineering, and some expert advice from our Design Lead, Colin regards chartership. Thank you to all those who attended – perhaps we will see some of you on site working with us one day!
