Due to instability in their home countries, the number of unaccompanied refugee children and young people travelling to the UK and seeking sanctuary in Portsmouth continues to rise. These children, who are often fleeing war, disaster and poverty, have travelled thousands of miles, have been separated from family through no fault of their own, and often speak little or no English. They need and deserve our support and a safe, nurturing home.
We need to recruit additional foster carers who can help us meet the cultural and religious needs of these vulnerable young people, and to offer a secure environment, often in the form of an emergency, short term placement.
Caring for these children is highly rewarding; supporting their ambitions to learn English, engage in education and discover their foster carer's own culture and way of life.
