The Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance welcomed our National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL) participants for a session. We are delighted that so many school leaders have attended both the NPQML and NPQSL training and we are near to qualifying – bringing the total trained over the past two years to over 80 school leaders from all sectors of the Portsmouth school community. These places have been funded by a DfE scholarship and represent an excellent opportunity for schools to enhance their school leadership skills.

Take part in the Junior Field Gun on Armed Forces Day
The council would like to establish a Junior Field Gun initiative in Portsmouth and arrange an annual competition with Plymouth, with Plymouth hosting it one year and Portsmouth the next.
In the meantime we would like to invite up to 10 primary and junior schools to take part in the Junior Field Gun on Armed Forces Day, Saturday 27 June 2020, at Castle Field, Southsea. A YouTube video for the Junior Field Gun held in Plymouth can be found here.
If your school is interested please contact Kelly Rooker. Participation will be on a first come first served basis. The event is open to Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Reading Well for Children Collection
The NEW Reading Well for Children Collection has launched this week. Reading Well for Children recommends reading to help children understand their feelings and worries and cope with tough times.
The booklist is targeted at children in Key Stage 2 (aged 7-11) and includes a wide range of reading levels to support less confident readers, and to encourage children to read together with their siblings and carers. The book list can be viewed here.

VE 75 Day Schools Project
The NEWS Foundation, working with The NEWS, Portsmouth, have created a unique schools celebration community project to mark VE 75 Day. At £2.50 per participating student, you will receive your personal Celebration Class Pack with over 35 unique lessons, activity cards, posters and commemorative ideas to be used leading up to VE Day, 2020.
This project will launch on 16 March, 2020 and run for six weeks until the VE Weekend of 8 May 2020 – when a full three days of Celebration Community Events is planned across the country.
Registration is open to the first thirty classes only and closes 12 March 2020.

Book launch: Gustav the Brave
Friday 21 February 2020 - 2pm to 4pm
During the Second World War specially trained homing pigeons braved bullets to deliver life-saving messages for Britain and her allies. Gustav was one of them. The D-Day Story invited writer Steve Tasane to work with a group of young writers – The Pigeon Squad – and artist Bob Moulder to bring Gustav’s D-Day tale to life in a rhyming picture book. Join us for the first public reading of the story, follow our pigeon trail, see Gustav’s Dickin Medal, make a pigeon puppet and discover more about the incredible achievements of pigeons in war.

Free PACE+ Approach training opportunity
Sigma Teaching School Alliance are offering a FREE opportunity to all staff from Portsmouth schools to learn practical, evidence-based strategies in order to be able to work successfully with children and young people with SEMH needs.
The course consists of 6 sessions, each session focusing on different aspects of the PACE+ Approach. The training is fully funded by the DfE as part of Turnaround Project and free to all staff from schools in Portsmouth.

Secondary school students inspired by apprenticeship bus
To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, secondary school students were introduced to an exciting range of career opportunities aboard a special apprenticeship bus.
Thanks to Shaping Portsmouth, ASK, Portsmouth City Council, University of Portsmouth, Solent Apprenticeship Hub and Stagecoach, students met real life apprentices from industries including marine, defence, graphic design, media, science and more.

Over 400 students visited the bus alongside a total of 12 secondary schools in Portsmouth.
Cllr Suzy Horton welcomed participation from local businesses during National Apprenticeship Week: "Every year, local organisations continue to support young people in the city with amazing opportunities aboard. It's great to see so many fantastic careers on offer to students."

FFT Aspire Training for Primary Schools 2019/20
Education Information Services (EIS) have arranged additional FFT Aspire training sessions for middle leaders, subject leaders and SENCOs on Tuesday 25 February 2020. There will be a primary school session in the morning, and secondary school session in the afternoon. Both are led by a trainer from FFT.
The sessions are free for schools purchasing the EIS SLA and initially, there is one free place per primary school and two places for secondary schools, subject to availability. Places are limited to 25 attendees. Please note that subject to demand, schools may request additional places but if there is insufficient overall demand the courses will not take place.
