Welcome to our first newsletter and thank you for wanting to stay connected with us on our plans to develop Tipner West.

Over the coming months we are looking forward to more progress and we will update you as and when this happens.

Your feedback

We would like to thank you and all of the other residents from Port Solent and Tipner East who were able to attend our drop-in information events on 26 September and 9 October.

As a new team, we were delighted to meet so many local residents and have the opportunity to share our vision and plans for Tipner West. It was important to receive your feedback and gain a better understanding of how you feel about the plans.

Common questions...

In addition to all the positive feedback we received, there were some common questions around the following areas and we have provided the answers within the information below:

Transport/access

Some people were concerned that the intended bridge will be used for cars but we can reassure you that this is not the case. A bridge connecting Tipner West to Horsea Island will not be used as a through route. Instead it will be primarily used by buses, cycles and pedestrians, in keeping with our vision to keep the surface of Tipner West car-free. It is therefore crucial that we provide an excellent bus network that connects Tipner West to Portsmouth City Centre and beyond.

Nature/protected land

Details of the compensation and justification under the Habitat Regulations are being developed in consultation with the key conservation bodies, such as Natural England, Environment Agency,  Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and the RSPB. We are carrying out all the studies and technical reports necessary and will share as and when results become available.

Funding

As part of the original City Deal, we received £48.75m from central government for the development of Tipner West. These funds will help to achieve some of the early works needed. However, the entire development will require more funding and that is the reason we are already talking to the industry. As a result of our Industry Day on 18 September, we have received a fantastic response from investors, developers and other relevant professional bodies. We have since been engaging with these potential partners in one-to-one meetings and will continue to do so throughout the first quarter of next year.

You might like to know...

In addition to the above, there were also some common concerns/questions around the following areas outside of this project and we have provided the relevant contact information:

Country Park

The team are currently working to complete all the steps linked to the closure of the landfill site. This has included the completion of the tree planting but there are still some other steps that need to be worked through. Once these are complete, we will be able to update residents on the Country Park.

Tipner Regeneration Company own the site to the east of the M275 and there is information provided on their website. Portsmouth City Council are unable to comment on this development at present.

What happens next...?

We are scheduled to complete the concept masterplan next month and then we will be going out with the updated information to the wider public early next year. This will include citywide public events where you will be invited to come and take a look at the proposals first hand. Look out for more details on social media, our website and via local media.
