Changes to the professional skills test for teachers
The professional skills tests will be replaced with a new provider-led assurance of fundamental English and Mathematics from 1 April 2020. This means that candidates who start a course on or after this date will not be required to pass the tests in order to train to teach and be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Candidates who start courses before 1 April 2020, including those on Assessment Only, Apprenticeship or EYTS routes, as well as legacy cases where QTS has been deferred for skills tests, will still be able to take the tests until 31 March 2020. Teach Portsmouth hits the road
The Teach Portsmouth team attended Get into Teaching's Train to Teach event in Brighton on 20th November. We had a fantastic time speaking to delegates about the opportunities that Portsmouth provides for teacher training, career progression and a great lifestyle. With over 250 attendees on the day, the event raised awareness of the Teach Portsmouth brand and the support that Portsmouth (and the PEP) can offer to those considering teaching as a career. We had a strong presence representing Portsmouth and Portsmouth ITT providers, such as the Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance, also had stands.
The Teach Portsmouth team will also be attending an ITE Primary Education recruitment fair at the University of Winchester this coming Wednesday.
Thinking Schools Academy Trust Launches Online Parenting Network
Thinking Schools Academy Trust has launched an innovative online parenting network to help improve parent voice and engagement across all its schools in Portsmouth.
Parents from across Thinking Schools’ eight schools in Portsmouth were invited to attend the official launch of the TSAT Portsmouth Parent Network at Penhale Infant School, to find out more about how they could get involved with this exciting initiative and the benefits.
The project is designed to bring together parents from across these schools into one online place, to engage them as part of the wider school and TSAT community and to gather feedback and insights to inform the work of both the individual schools and the Trust.
The network will primarily provide an online platform for parent consultation, creating a space for parents and carers to share their views, thoughts, feelings and opinions. It will also hold three coffee mornings over the course of each academic year allowing for face to face interactions and parent networking and providing those without access to the online platform an opportunity to engage.

The Portsmouth Academy Joins an International Student Exchange Programme
The Portsmouth Academy is partnering with Collège Arlette Hée Fergant in Vimoutiers, in Normandy, France to offer an international student exchange programme for Year 8 students. This programme began in October with a seminar in Le Havre, France, attended by three Year 8 students who acted as ambassadors for the academy.
The Portsmouth Academy’s students will visit France before Easter and our French partner school will come to Portsmouth during the Autumn term of the 2020/2021 academic year. This is a truly exciting opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in the French culture and language.

Band and Bugles of the Rifles inspire Portsmouth's young musicians
Musicians from the Band of Bugles of the Rifles inspired young musicians from Portsmouth Music Hub's wind bands by forming a joint ensemble for a day.
The event, which took place on Saturday 16 November, was created to motivate and inspire young musicians, enabling them to perform with professional musicians and experience the thrill of playing as part of a professional band.
The army bands have been excellent supporters of the Hub and were in fact the very first partner to sign up to support Portsmouth's young people over eight years ago. The Band and Bugles of the Rifles perform at events around the world in a variety of settings including Sounding Retreats, Freedom Parades, Tattoos and community events.
An explosion of creativity
There was a touch of Strictly Come Dancing at the Kings Theatre on Wednesday (20 November) when professional and amateur dancers from across the region joined hundreds of local children for the very first production of Dance Explosion!
A thousand primary-aged children packed the Kings Theatre in Southsea, and for many of them this was the first time they had the chance to watch a range of dance performances live on stage. Dance Explosion! didn't disappoint, and the children were treated to tap, tango and street dance, musical theatre, jazz and ballroom, Indian dance and the mesmerising beauty of Chinese classical dance.
Dance Explosion was a collaboration between Portsmouth Music Hub and the Kings Theatre, with both organisations committed to developing cultural awareness and opportunities for children and young people in the city.
