My Teacher on a Postcard Art Exhibition |
|
|
Fantastic response to the My Teacher on a Postcard Exhibition so far with over 4500 postcards already requested by schools. It's so easy to take part - encourage your pupils (and staff!) to use their imagination to create a piece of hand-crafted or digital art, or written work (such as a description, a poem or a story) or even take a photograph that reflects the theme of My Teacher.
Please let us know how many postcards your school would like - email TeachPortsmouth@portsmouthcc.gov.uk. Deadline to request postcards is July 5th 2019.
Completed postcard entries to be submitted by 13th September 2019.
We expect the exhibition will last for a number of days during Teach Portsmouth week (w/c 30 September 2019) and we hope you will want to bring groups from your school to see the exhibition and vote for your favourite postcards. There are prizes for the winning artists and their schools.
Portsmouth School Experience Programme - funding available for schools
At the beginning of September we will be launching the first of our campaigns to encourage people to consider teaching in Portsmouth. The "next step" that we will be asking prospective teachers to register with Portsmouth to gain school experience.
We are therefore looking for host schools to take prospective teachers over the course of the 2019/20 school year, probably over 2-3 days, and allow them to:
- Sit in on a variety of lessons, working with pupils under the guidance of the teacher;
- Receive advice from the Head or CPD lead on routes into teaching;
- Talk to a newly or recently qualified teacher in the school about their experience.
We hope to be able to secure some funding from the Portsmouth Education Elementary Fund to contribute to the administrative costs to schools of providing quality school experiences which could be up to £1500 for a school (or group of schools) able to take up to 10 prospective teachers over the course of the year.
To express an initial interest in taking part please contact Alison.Critchley@portsmouthcc.gov.uk by Tuesday 2 July .

Maths Hub Programmes
Mastery Readiness Programme The Mastery Readiness Programme is for schools that want to adopt teaching for mastery in maths, but would benefit from a staged approach.
Schools that are successful in implementing sustained and meaningful change through teaching for mastery have key foundations already in place.
These key foundations include:
- shared vision and culture around the importance of maths
- a belief that every child can achieve highly in maths
- a positive mind-set towards maths amongst all staff
- good maths subject knowledge amongst teachers and TAs
- systems that maximise learning, such as timetabling, intervention, curriculum and pedagogical approaches
- teaching of arithmetical proficiency for all children, to support mathematical fluency by reducing cognitive load
- ongoing staff development, which is valued by all staff and senior leaders.
The Mastery Readiness Programme offers support and development in these areas.
Please note: You are only eligible for this programme if you have not completed one of our other mastery programmes. If you have any further queries, or would like to find out more, please contact the Hub or have a look at the information. If you would like to register your interest for this programme please email amanda.ponsford@solentmathshub.org.uk and we will be in contact in due course.
Maths SLE School Improvement Support Programme This project aims to support mathematics Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) in developing their approaches to maths school improvement work, including drawing on the expertise of, and aligning more with approaches used in, the Maths Hubs Programme. It will provide a regional support programme for participants through three workshops and an online community.
NCETM Accredited PD Lead Programmes
The NCETM and the Maths Hubs Network aim to provide the opportunity for all teachers of maths to benefit from high quality, collaborative professional development. This means that there needs to be enough people with the skills and capacity to lead, facilitate and support the professional development of others both within and across schools.
The NCETM Accredited Professional Development Lead Programme is designed specifically to increase the number of such people and is part of the Maths Hubs Network’s strategy to build up a group of Professional Development Leads who can support the work of hubs.
Maths Hubs are now recruiting teachers to join these programmes in 2019/20.

'Planet Full of Plastic' written by local author
Plastic Free Portsmouth are really excited to have worked with Neal on his most recent book, which is released this week. There will be a Book Launch at the Round Tower, Broad Street, Old Portsmouth on Saturday 29th June, 4 - 5pm and a chance for people to hear about Neal's journey of writing the book, hear the story read by Neal, and a Q&A session with David Jones (Just One Ocean) and Clare Seek (Plastic Free Portsmouth). It's free for all to attend and Hayling Island Book Shop will also be there, selling books, which Neal will sign. Flyers have been sent to all primary aged children.
This will be a great book for use in school to discuss environmental issues with KS1 & KS2 children. Every Portsmouth primary school will get at least 1 copy of the book, provided by the School Library Service, and we're hoping a second will also be donated by the people of Portsmouth, through a crowdfunder that is currently being run.
Finally, if you'd like any support in school to talk about plastics, the Plastic Free Portsmouth team (linked with Surfers Against Sewage) are always happy to come in to school to take assemblies, teach classes and work with student councils. Your school can also work towards Plastic Free School status, which is a student led SAS initiative, and you'll probably find that a lot of what's required is already being done. Contact the team at plasticfreeportsmouth@gmail.com for more information.
