School Workforce Census
The
census date for this year's school workforce census is Thursday 2nd
November 2017.
Please
make sure that your data are entered into your Management Information System in
time for the census date. We are aware that for some schools, this is the first
time that you will be using this method for the census, so please ensure that
you allow adequate time to prepare for this work.
I would like to remind you that your staff (especially new colleagues) should
have received a copy of the Privacy Notice regarding the use of their data.
Please note that DfE have not changed the notice this year, so last year's
version is still valid.
Do
contact your MIS support team for systems support to ensure that you are
prepared as soon as possible. As ever, Education Information Services will
assist schools that purchase their SLA with guidance and support with the DfE's
rules and COLLECT website.
If
you have any questions about this, please contact André Merel on 023 9284 1239 or email andre.merel@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
Prevent
- Education Update
Charlie
Pericleous, Prevent Coordinator and John Webster, the council's newly appointed
Prevent Education Officer, spoke at a national conference on the role of
Education in Tackling Radicalisation. Over 100 teachers and professionals
attended Inside Government's Conference with Charlie and John describing
Portsmouth's successful work with schools to safeguarding vulnerable people
from extremism and how future challenges can be met through the Prevent
programme.
The
current climate suggests that schools and colleges are confident and clear on
how Prevent sits within a wider Safeguarding framework. However, the next phase
is for schools and colleges to find space within the curriculum to develop more
critical thinking so that young learners can challenge and discuss
controversial issues like extremism and radicalisation. John can come to any
educational establishment to offer support and advice. john.webster@portsmouthcc.gov.uk
Portsmouth Primary Engineer
The
Portsmouth Primary Engineer Programme will be launched this term, involving 20
primary schools who have signed up to the programme (Key Stage 1 and Key Stage
2). The project seeks to increase teaching staff confidence in delivering STEM
through engineering projects; inspire pupils to engage with STEM, support maths
and literacy and enhance social skills; and link schools with engineers to
increase awareness (pupils and teachers) of Engineering
The
programme will kick off with a training day for 40 teachers on 7th
November at QinetiQ in Gosport. A celebration day including competitions
between school teams is planned for June 2018 at UTC Portsmouth. Further
updates of the programme will be given in future editions of the schools
bulletin. The expectation is that the programme will be extended to other
primary schools in 2018/19 as well as secondary schools (Years 7 - 9).
Another
opportunity this year which is open to all schools is for pupils to enter the Primary
and Secondary Engineer Leaders Award. The deadline date for
entries is 28th March 2018

Flu Vaccination
Please consider getting a flu vaccination this year to
protect your own health and that of your students, colleagues, family and
friends. Flu can be a nasty illness that leaves you really unwell for over a
week and the flu vaccine is the best protection we have against this
unpredictable virus. The vaccination is free for certain groups such as
pregnant women and those with long-term health conditions like diabetes.
Children aged 2-8 also get a free nasal vaccination. If you have children aged
2-3 they should be taken to their GP to get this, children aged 4-8 will be
offered this at school by the school nurse. For more on the flu vaccination and
other advice on staying well during winter visit www.nhs.uk/staywell.
Risk Mapping
A new initiative has launched in
Portsmouth to proactively disrupt the exploitation of young people in the city.
It works by receiving information from professionals working with young people,
which is recorded safely, securely and confidentially on a database. This,
alongside input from Hampshire Police, enables mapping and links to be made to
reduce the opportunities for young people to be at risk of child sexual exploitation,
criminal and drug exploitation, drug and alcohol use and radicalisation. This
risk mapping project will contribute to safeguarding children in Portsmouth but
can only work if people like you who work with young people provide knowledge
and information. You just need to email portsmouth.riskmapping@portsmouthcc.gcsx.gov.uk.
Be extra vigilant!
Please be aware that a forged £20 has recently crossed the path of one of our schools. The Bank of England has produced a guidance document to help cash users identify genuine Bank of England notes.
Infectious diseases
Public
Health England has updated their guidance on managing cases of infectious
diseases in early years settings and schools:

There
are several links on this page, including the 'exclusion table' and a checklist
of actions for a diarrhoea and vomiting outbreak.
Odds Off - Gambling abuse / awareness prevention
Odds Off is a gambling awareness/abuse prevention
organisation for young people which strives to give a clear
understanding of the detrimental effects of gambling abuse. Social media and
television/radio are plagued with gambling advertisements. They continue to
display an illusion that everyone can win with deceptions including special offers
and bonuses which are cunningly advertised. Odds Off show how no gambling
addict ever wins in this vicious circle.
Speakers from Odds Off have dealt directly with
gambling addiction and show the extent of what this addiction has the power to
carry out. Many problem gamblers start in their young teens and don't
understand the severity and reality of this dependency until it's too late.
