Just here to train

Just Here to Train poster

On 3 May 2023 we launched our ‘Just Here to Train’ campaign against harassment at gyms.

We want to reach out to a new area of business and thought we would introduce our team to gyms countywide. Over two days we visited different locations and spoke to staff to see if there were any concerns. Nearly every staff member we spoke to suggested that harassment of members is an issue. Some members think harassment is to be expected where bodies are on show and they rarely report it to police.

Gyms have shown interest in the project and have agreed to display our promotional material in their changing rooms. A poster has been designed which includes a QR code to report incidents and to explain the law around harassment.

We will be approaching all gyms in Essex for their support. We will be explaining to staff how to signpost to Essex Police and other services, plus importantly how to report incidents and the prosecution process. We want everyone to know that this behaviour is not tolerated.

We will monitor reports at gym locations, offer support to both victims and business and ensure that all available evidence has been obtained.

We spent more time at Stansted Airport, supporting business and looking at how to prevent incidents of abuse and threatening behaviour towards public facing employees.

Unfortunately, staff at the check-In desks and security are subjected to abusive behaviour from the public on a daily basis. Passengers get frustrated with procedure and the employees receive the brunt of it, so we are working with the airport to look at ways to prevent it and get something in place before the summer holiday rush.

Alert information system

Alert!

The Business Crime Team have been rolling out an information sharing platform to businesses that will be free of charge for employees to use.

The idea is that businesses can use the online platform ALERT to support each other and share information, pictures and news in order to prevent and detect crime in their areas. The system works equally for individual industrial and retail areas as well as whole towns or boroughs.

The system is secure and only members can access the information.

The team will be posting crime prevention advice and newsletters to support businesses.

Business Advisory Groups look to gather similar business sectors together as support groups. These groups consist of people from similar business areas, all supporting each other and learning about crime prevention and sharing proven practices. We often invite guest speakers.

When and how to contact the Police

We understand that businesses are extremely busy and not always clear on the most appropriate method to contact the police. If you would like to report business related crime or antisocial behaviour, which is not an emergency you can use our online digital 101 service at www.essex.police.uk We also have a live chat facility at the bottom of our website or if you prefer to speak to someone you can call 101.

Alternatively if an incident is happening right now, and it feels like the situation could get heated or violent very soon or someone is in immediate danger? Please call 999. If you're deaf or hard of hearing, you can use our textphone service 18000 or text us on 999 if you’ve pre-registered with the emergency SMS service.

If you have ongoing business crime concerns you can contact the Business Crime Team at business.crime.team@essex.police.uk
